Just had my car fail it's mot for a missing clamp and a deteriorated second clamp(7.1.1a).

Is this normal or abit harsh?

Well given it says deteriorated I'm assumg it's the rubber bits that hold the back box on? My dad had one snapped and one nearly snapped.....the weight of a backbox and the chance of it falling of is pretty bad so I'd say it's fair.

The clamps that they refer to are the regular clamps that hold in place the male/female type parts of the exhaust.
This is all the car failed on.

This was done at the local vw dealer for a "free" mot.
Should have expected this really...

Must be a pretty unhelpful garage if they didn't fit a new clamp for you and just pass it tbh... being a VAG dealer they would have likely had the right clamp in stock. Literally a 30 second job with the car up on the ramps.

They did offer but I have an aftermarket exhaust fitted(milltek) and they didn't have any clamps big enough to fit the pipes.
Although saying that Its 2.5" and I'm sure the R32 would be a similar size

If you don't have clamps holding sections of exhaust together then it not securely fixed, so hardly surprising it failed the MOT and in no way unfair. A couple of new clamps will be cheap and pretty simple to fit, so you should be able to get the car back in for a re-test PDQ.

Only one has actually come off at presnt but that have basically rusted away.
Pretty poor really when you pay for a stainless steel exhaust to not have suitable clamps.

My 318 failed on this. The same garage used a thick rubber band (in a different section of the exhaust) to hold it and get it through the MOT.
