Now for me it's meaningless and I expect 99.4% of people here but now if your wealthy and own lots of classics not only do you not have to buy a RFL but now now MOT

I'm thinking something <1960 then a simple conversion to modern running gear, RFL and MOT free motoring.
 
I think it's a great idea but also they should have rust checks done on them. granted most owners know about them but id imagine a fair few wouldnt know where to start.
 
I don't really "get" this.

I mean surely the MOT is there to make sure all cars are roadworthy? There are going to be pre-1960s cars out there in a right state and now the owners have a carte blanche to take them on the roads.

Tend to be? So can we expect more demographics to be selected for exemption from the MOT test.

While I'm sure George does go out there once a month to check his tyres and top the oil up does he have all the required equipment to test the efficiency of the brakes?

Oh and the point about saving money... £35 once a year?! If that really is a consideration then you clearly aren't in the no expense spared on maintenance camp!

I don't see how this helps with road safety, which is the point of MOT is it not?

By modern standards, every pre 1960 car is a theoretical deathtrap anyway. Most classic owners use very sympathetic MOT test stations as most mainstream stations wouldn't really have much clue how to properly test a classic and just fail it anyway.
 
It does seem something of a odd move - if they really wanted to placate classics owners they'd have shifted the tax threshold forward a decade or two.
Seems a somewhat empty gesture with little positive impact. It won't really help the majority of owners who pay through the nose to keep their pride and joy on the road.

Seems a strange one but I can see the point behind it. People don't drive 1950s cars because they can't afford to upgrade to a 1980s car. Most cars are almost worthless after about 15 years. It really would have to be a classic for someone to bother. As for safety, I suppose most things are out of the window with a car that old anyway such as seatbelts and brakes. Do they even test emssions on a car that old? Were there any regulations then? You don't have to keep a 1990s car to 2012 standards.

Aside from all this, you can still be pulled and fined by the police half-way between MOTs for safety issues with a car.
 
Do any of you own a pre-1960 car? I was wondering because I have to put mine through a number of MOT hoops each year which is a pain and does nothing for the car and just costs me money. I spend a lot of time keeping it going (it was my Dads) and is in a better roadworthy state than most foriegn cars you see on the UK roads.

The new MOT test means that most of it is exempt from it or they dont have the data to tell me if its passed or not (not many have the old fashioned brake testing equipment and a rolling road/shaker is not designed for classic cars - it does more damage and does not have the data to pass it).

I contantly fail on no seatbelts (not reqd), leaking steering box(was designed to leak - thats how it works!), no washers (self explanitary - doesnt come with washers), emmissions are a waste of time on an engine designed before emmissions tests, play in steering rack - its as good now as at the time of manufacture and is completely safe if you know what you are doing!

An MOT is now £50 odd as you cant take it to the run of the mill quick fit (as they cant do the work on the car so are not interested!) - thats £50 I shouldnt have to give to someone to tell me what I already know - this is a win for logic and reason and I am just gutted that my MOT is next week!!!!:( (hence the rant as I have been under the car greasing the 53 grease points!!)

Don't worry, most of the classic car fraternity doesn't get it either. In fact, most campaigned against it for exactly that reason. Most are worried about the small minority who are going to abuse it and get the rest of classic car owners a bad name. It's bad enough already, you only have to read some of the spiteful comments I get on here about my cars, and mine have always been 100% roadworthy.

To be honest I've not seen any real negative comments about your cars on here for years since the regulars all grew up a bit.
