If you're a Taxi, it's a different story, in many district councils there are standards of cleanliness Taxis must pass for their bi-yearly MOT and Taxi test.

Op is in Northern Ireland so what happens over here doesn't really matter......
 
well, my MOT is in 2hrs 40mins. As said, the car is slightly dirty (salt and road scum etc but no much stuck in wheel arches). The interior is slightly untidy, a few crumbs here and there but I haven't got time to clean to so wish me luck :) This will be my first MOT and I don't want to fail :(

A lot of cars don't have a clear view of a lot of such things. A proper death trap could pass an MOT, if it was a death trap out of sight. Supercars for example.

"Are brake lines free from corrosion? Don't know, can't see most of their length, under tray runs the entire length of the car, PASS!"

But yes, that's why they're saying it should be reasonably clean.
 
My MOT is on Saturday morning, my car is filthy, like really filthy and I can't be assed to clean it as i work all day. It's also missing 2 hubs so it is looking like it hasn't been cared for. Do you reckon this would have any impact on the MOT?

I know technically it won't, but I bet subconsciously the first impressions won't be good.

So shall, i put some effort in or not???

That depends. Is it a Corsa? if so it'll fail anyway.
Just don't say to the tester, "There's nothing wrong with it so it should pass" or words to that effect. I hate it when people say that (unless they have good mechanical knowledge and look after their car) it then puts me on a mission determined to fail the car.
You're better off to say its just an old car for running to your work, and never ever tell a tester your about to sell the car, can make a pass with advisories into a fail very easily.

It seemed ok to me and cleared the windscreen effectively in my humble opinion but the MOT tester said different. No mind though. It was only a tenner or so for new ones and I wasn't going to argue over two wiper blades.

It failed on .....

Two wipers, vrm lamp, o/f suspension arm had excessive play on the ball joint, small hole in exhaust and parking brake was below standard.

The vrm light was faulty wiring which was easily fixed and has happened in the last few weeks as it did work not so long back.

The car needed a few other things doing which weren't MOT failures.

Rear brake pads and discs, n/s/r brake caliper, o/s/r brake caliper.

Basically wear and tear stuff.
