hi

i jus had my mot on saturday, and i got 2 tyres that have a patch were the tread is below legal limit, i just ordered new tyres today and will have them fitted tomorrow.

but my question is am i not ment to drive the car until the tyres are fixed or am i allowed to drive to and from garage etc, or do i leave it at the garage.

only asking this because there are regular police checks happening near my house, they flag random cars to do safety checks etc. if i were to be flaged in would i get points etc?

I assume you would.

Your meant to replace a tyre before it gets bellow 1.6mm across the 3/4 breadth and whole circumference of the tyre.

An illegal tyre is an illegal tyre in the policemans eyes.

EDIT : Depends on how small and where the patch is, i suppose :)

Regardless of the condition of the tyres, you can drive it to / from a place where it is being MOT'd. For the most part, you can actually drive any condition of car to a garage provided that it has a pre-booked MOT there!

I suppose look at it this way. If your tyres were shown as failing an MOT, then they're no more illegal now as they were before you took it in for the MOT.

If a cop stopped you and saw illegal tyres you'll be done regardless of the MOT. However if they're on the verge I'm sure you'd just get a recommendation to change them. Its not like they've got chords showing through is it?

If its FAILED the MOT on tyres, they are below the legal limit and if stopped at a safety check, you WOULD get done and not just a recommendtion to change them.

as i said in origonal post, im geting new tyres tomorow and Mot retest. they also said the other 2 will need doing in few months but im gonna get them done in 2 weeks time when i get paid again.

i was jus wondering if there was a law/rule that allowed you to drive to the garage to get them done. i couldnt leave my car at the garage till tuesday as i needed to get to work today.

How would a cop know they've failed an MOT on it?

As I said they are illegal. But they were also illegal the day before the MOT test.

I was just imagining that a cop would add a bit of leniancy depending on the amount of wear on the tread. If there's 1mm remaining then instead of doing you they may just suggest to get them changed with a bit of a telling off.

He wouldnt - my point was that it if just failed an MOT, its below the limit.

Thankfully cops dont tend to show leniency to people who drive around with bald tyres - especially as most people would shrug, say they'd get it changed and not bothered.

It still amazes me that people fail MOT's on tyres - do people never bother to check they're tyres and think the once a year MOT test is sufficient that they dont have to bother? A tyre with 1.6mm of tread - the legal limit - is WELL past its best and a copper knows this.

I agree. However the OP said there is a patch where the tyre is under the legal limit. That doesn't doesnt read 'bald'. Flat spotted maybe?
