Ok, its a KV8 Pro

2 days ago, powercut (wasn't using pc at the time but it was plugged in). When it came back on, it said fail safe defaults have been loaded (ie bios). I changed it to optimized defaults, it loaded up fine.

Then yesterday, for the first time ever, it started bleeping like a siren (two tones ... beeep bEEEEp beeeep bEEEEp etc). Yesterday this happened when I had Photoshop Elements 2 open, with many files, although they were all small (all for web based images), nothing huge. Other programs were open as well

And just now it was beelping with 2xFF windows open, winamp playing a song, and msn messenger. (+ a few other things such as Zone alarm, AVG, modem driver thing etc)

BTW the 7 segment display thing on the mobo showed "4.8." while it was bleeping, but hasnt changed since. I am not sure if thats the usual display anyway though?

Any ideas?

That is what I meant. (ignore the typo in the title btw). Its a two pitch bleep, that sounds like your typical fire engine/police siren (ish)

Try clearing the cmos. Since u said u "loaded optimised defaults" then I assume u havent already tried this. I once blew up a PSU by turning on at the socket with 2 power bars and the PSU switch inbetween the socket and PSU. It went pop which I assume was a capacitor, since your PSU still works try the bios reset. :)

Is the beeping anything like a siren from a fire engine at all?

That sound usually means that the CPU is overheating (or at least the motherboard thinks it is). Also double check that the CPU fan is running at the correct speed.

At the least, take the heatsink and fan off and reapply thermal compound then refit carefully.

I've had this before. It is either the CPU fan is too slow/not working or the Temperature alarm for the CPU is set too low. Either disable fan sensing or raise the CPU alarm temp in the BIOS.

I had a mobo that made this sound when the cpu fan stopped running  , got to it in time, no damage. :)

Like he said, I think thats your problem too. My Dad's PC always does it when he play a game, I've told him he needs more than just a cpu cooler in there but he doesn't listen.

Check your fans on CPU and chipset, then reset BIOS using whatever method your board manual recommends. I've had something similar whn I've tried to push my memory tooo far :) I have to clear the BIOS using the jumpers on my board.

I had a similar problem on a gigabyte board a few months back.

For some reason it started beeping at random times and wouldn't stop until I reset the computer a few times.

I turned off sound alarm when fan speed is below certain amount. The fans weren't below the limit but it was still going off all is fixed now.

This sound you describe warns you of a low RPM on your primary fan, in this case your cpu fan. Check all connections/fan speed controllers and see.

I will be suprised if it is another error.
