Dear all,

I wish to get a render box going, the 1090t seems to do better than 950 - multi threaded cinebench test:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/CPU/39

Price wise the 1090t has far more to offer it seems.

However there are so many options of motherboard prices £40 - £250, but most of the info goes on about graphic card slots, SATA 6GB, etc..... all features that are irrelevant to rendering (CPU anyway).

What I would most need is:
fast and efficient in the CPU computation side
overclocking facilities
ideally option of 16G RAM
onboard graphics.
I think all options come with gigabit ethernet.

I wont be using this as a PC as such, just to render.

Budget is vital to keep as low as possible if it is to work out max better value than going up to intel x6 levels, ie if a £40 board could do it then great!

Anyway that's about it. Any advice comments most appreciated.

Cheers!

Thanks GeezerButler,

Yeah I've been looking at that one. The 1600 (OC) and CPU power at 125W. Will that give good stable overclocking do you think?

I was looking at that compared to the slightly more expensive (+£30) Asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB3, AMD 890GX, which has 2000(OC) rating and 140W CPU power support. Would that be better / easier to overclock with asus bundled oc ware? Does the the unique level3 cache make a difference? Says it's better with power. Is the 140W going to be more stable and get faster speeds, especially if crunching for a long time?

I also did look at lower than the 890GX chipset, 7's as they are a lot cheaper, do the 890GX help with the speed overall for pure crunching?

I've spent ages looking, and see more written about asus than biostar, it's really helpful to actually ask someone for real! Very much appreciate the help.

Cheers

I have a version of the Biostar board the GXE and its good, i have OC to 4Ghz easily, the NB gets hot in my case as im using a Matx case so i have to directly cool it and i think the GX HD version sold on here has a different heatsink and no Mosfet cooling!!

I had 4ghz running in about 5 mins just by upping the multi and increasing Vcore to 1.45 (this is a bit higher than others have had to use on different boards but could be due to CPU).

Bios options are what you expect and are quite simple to follow, there have been regular bios updates this year, i think im on my third.

The only thing i dont like is that voltages are shown as + or - rather than the actual voltage but that comes from using ASUS boards in my main rig for the last few years.

I also tried to let the board auto overclock to see what it would do, it crashed after about 5mins in windows.

I managed to OC my 1333 Ram to 1600.

Considering i got my board for 60 quid and its now for sale for 80+ i think i had a result.

I would recommend it.

Edit :i also just noticed the board on OC dosnt have USB 3 ports ?? but as you said you are not interested in these anyway
