Hi people.. First post on the forums!! Im needing a little help on what motherboard to get, been out of the hardware scene for a little while so a little lost!! My current machine is a little dated with a amd 64 x2 6500+ 4gb 800mhz ddr2, a 400w crosaire psu and 9800gt graphics. I have recently got hold of an intel q9500 and 8gb of ddr3 1333mhz non-ecc unbuffered memory (4 x 2gb) and want to use the bits tp upgrade. I wonder is someone can recommend a good motherboard for the available parts and a build configuration?

I'm looking to spend up to around £50 on a mobo as the 775 is pretty much dead so theres no point spending loads of money on something thats never going to get an upgrade. I have seen this mobo,

ASUS P5G41C-M LX priced at around £40

fits what I need (I think) but maybe theres a better one out there for the price? All help much appreciated!!!!

Welcome to the forum and please remove the link to competitor as it will get you a ban.

As for that mobo you're considering it has 2 DDR2 and 2 DDR3 slots so won't accommodate all 4 sticks of your memory. It also comes with an ancient ICH7 SATA controller and won't be any good at overclocking your Q9550 at all. You're much better off imo getting a 2nd hand P5Q-Pro/E/Deluxe or gigabyte P45 based motherboard.

cheers for the quick reply and advice!!! My bad, link removed, wouldn't be too helpful to get banned from the first post would it!!! Ill have a browse for those mb and see whats available!

Hey, I had a look for the motheboards you recommended but they are a little expensive for what I want. The 775 socket is pretty much dead in the water now in terms of futur upgrades, especially with the new intel and amd cpus on the doorstep. I don't really want to spend that much money on a mother board and then throw it away a year later to get a sandybridge / am3+ compatible board. Any recommendations on more of a budget board that would meet my needs? I found this one which looks promising,

Actually just remembered you have DDR3 mem so P5Q-Pro/E/Deluxe is out of the question. Gigabyte "P45C" series are decent and support DDR3 but they're out of your price range, even though a 2nd hand one on auction site should be possible for around 50 quid.

The mobo you link to only has 2 mem sockets so will only take 4Gb. Other than that it will do the job but no more.

Had a browse around overclocker and these are they only ones that would be suitable. Which one would you recommend?

I currently have 4gb 800mhz ddr2, would I see a big improvement using ddr3 over the current ddr2? Also I would be open to selling the ddr3 memory and picking up some ddr2 if the difference between the two is not that great. I read somewhere that they perform around the same?
