OK - i am currently wanting to build my own pc
i have a budget, but want to get a good motherboard, so that i can build around it, my idea is to buy an antec super lanboy case also
i am going to buy a top of the range processore, but get a poor graphics card to save money until i can afford it
i want to get i think an athlon x2 processor
my motherboard budget is around 100-130 (or cheaper if possible) and i want 1 that is top of the market (if my budget allows) and will handle the newest graphics cards, and the x2
thanks... :D

Asus A8N-SLI Premium if you are not overclocking.

DFI nF4 SLI-D or Ultra-D if you are overclocking.

tbh i know very little about overclocking so doubt i will be
are the first 2 boards able to overclock if i ever decide,,,or should i take my interest to the latter or are they slower if i decide NOt to overclock?...
and they should all fit good in the case?

At stock they will all be exactly the same speed (pretty much). The Asus has more features though, extra SATA ports etc. If/when you overclock the DFI should be able to get a higher speed, but the BIOS is very confusing and it's tricky to set up.

I'd reccomend the Asus if this is your first build :)

Yeah, its my first build, well...i have built up computers that had components, like took them apart and put them together, but never acutally done it all myself

so then the first asus you suggested...reviews,recommend?

Going on your other thread in the General Hardware forum, you state that your budget isn't very big.

I'm just wondering why you think your mobo budget is £100-120 (which I'd class as TOP end), when you can get a perfectly good motherboard for less than half that.

People will be happy to recommend you something in that price range if you tell them that that is what you have to spend. But I get the feeling that you'd be better off with something MUCH cheaper!

You say you wont overclock - and overclocking is one of the few reasons to have an expensive motherboard. The only other reason I can think of for having an expensive motherboard is for SLI/Crossfire support. But then you say you're looking to SAVE on graphics - so I can't see you needing SLI!

I think you'll get better help if you tell people how much you have to spend - and what you'll be doing with your comp, and what you expect from it.

Ahh lol my fault for not asking him a budget :p

In that case the Asus A8N-E or A8N5X would suit you much better. Or pretty much any good brand name nForce4 mobo (Gigabyte, MSI, Epox, Abit etc.).

Well its not your fault :)

He DID specify a budget for his mobo (100-130), but in his other thread he said he was on a fairly low budget (seems like ~400 ish) for near-on a full system.

I can see why he thinks he needs a GOOD motherboard, as it is central to the rest of the system. But he doesnt seem to be into gaming and he's not big on overclocking from what i can tell. So he doesnt need to spend anywhere near £130 on his motherboard.

Like you I'd recommend the Epox boards - but unfortunately, they're sold out on OCUK just now.

yes sorry bout all the confusion
thats why i came to a place like this - i didnt realise how quick the price can rack up
tbh - my budget is unknown
im only 16 so i am saving money for a car at the moment...however, i think around 500 and maybe a little more is my budget
thanks

On a budget price I think the Asus Crossfire I use is excellent value for money. Stable and only £69.95+vat. I know some people have had issues with these but they appear to be primarally hardcore overclockers (not sure how hardcore though as it's used in the OC mega rig without problem) and from my POV it's one of the best value mobo's around at the moment.

cheers for all the feedback
its going to be a while till i get the parts anyway - just wanting some rough guides on prices so thanks to you all
special thanks to sumang007 ;)

If it's not going to be for a while then I would suggest that OCUK may, in the near future, stock the Asrock Dual SATA ;) I'm very pleased with the one I used in my nippers PC and there are lots of cheap AGP graphics cards around at the moment. This mobo has a large amount of posts to help you along with your build and, best of all, it's apparently made for ASUS! :)

Basically - i have thought about it
And decided that it may be worth paying the money for a good asus motherboard - with pci express slots of course
I am sticking with plans to get the lanboy case
Ive heard it might be a tight fit but hopefully should be fine - will the front fan on lanboy be able to be recorded if i buy controllers for my case? - thanks in advance...

I have only managed to get CPU and Chassis fan 1 reported. Unfortunately, Ch fan 1 is at the top of the mobo so you might find it stretchy for front fan?

the case has changed
i have heard good and bad for the case so i know both sides of the story so no comments here please
the aspire x cruiser silver - with 420w power as yewen advised was a good deal

anyways - there seems to be a lot of undecisiveness of what mobo to get
fast, reliable, has pci - e and can get the most out of a great processor...

In that case imho your choice would currently be the ASUS Premium. Check out the spec's, it does the lot, has enough overclocking for the casual user and is quiet and reliable.
DFI seem to be aimed at the 'extreme', experienced overclocking enthusiasts and the reliability and ease of use appear to be suspect? I also don't like the RMA arrangements. So unless you crave the slightly superior overclocking abilities and technical backup from the excellent users forums of the DFI but still want a top quality, fully equiped mobo go for the Premium. You won't be dissapointed ;)
