More specifically for those of a creative ilk.

I have been told by many people including a literary agent that I am a talented author. I have been writing on and off for about 7 years and have been working on something that has been praised a lot.

Ultimately though I am not getting very far with it. Working full time (50+ hours) having a missus, a baby and a widely spread network of friends I struggle to find time.

So has anyone been in similar circumstances? What has been your motivation and how did you push through it?

I enjoy it and tell myself to finish it and the work grind would (hopefully) be over and I could enjoy life and generally things would be good :) even then at 10-11pm when I'm knacked, have to be up in 7 hours and all the rest I struggle to get going.

So, anyone got any wise words or prior experiences of this who can help me?

Thanks

Starting is the hard part and it looks like you've already done that. I'd say read some motivation books but you probably wouldn't bother.

Draw up a plan of your week and include everything you have to do, work commitments, family commitments, play time, your time e.t.c. When you've done that look at the gaps you have left and that's time you can spend writing your book.

It might be worth speaking to Forde (Edrof after a name change) or Dark_Angel as both are or have been writing in their spare time.

It's not for a creative purpose but in terms of studying I find that the best thing to do is often to simply ensconce yourself somewhere with no distractions and get on with it. It doesn't always work and there will often be things that seem more attractive to do but remember you're doing this because you want to or as Leo Rosten would have it "'The only reason for being a professional writer is that you just can't help it.".
