Hi,

I'm considering doing my DAS (think thats the correct term) in a couple of months, as I've always had a desire to learn to ride a bike at some point and being over 21, feel I might as well go and get the full license all at once.

Anyhow, the real substance of my question was in relation to bike insurance and what I could expect to pay on a bike following the test, probably something like a 600cc. Is it relatively cheap, or quite expensive.

John

Out of interest roughly how much can you pick up a bike for (in reasonable condition) and all the associated equipment/apparel for?

I've just done DAS.
Spent £550 on clothing
I've put away about £450 for insurance
A reasonable SV will set me back between £1500 and £2,000
Plus whatever costs incurred for the training.

It's not a cheap hobby :p

If it's any good to you 19 years old 2 years license and ncb, 3 bikes = £789TPFT with carole nash. 1 Honda VFR800, 1 BSA Roundtank (1924) and 1 Norton ES2 (1945ish).

Fully comp on a ER6F 2006, no NCB as I have had my full license less than a year, 32 c. £600
+ £270 on a lid
+ £300 on armoured trousers and a decent jacket and gloves
+ £50 on a Datatag kit - well worth it IMO, brought the insurance down by about £70.

I was 21 when I passed my test, I pay about £500 TPFT for an R6.
Who was that with?

I'm 21 with 1 years bike ncb no points or anything and I'm looking at £1,500+ TPO for any sports 600 :(

Carole Nash are top in my opinion, when I passed my test 6 years ago and bought my Bandit 600 they were about £240 ish IIRC, a lot of other insurers said the wouldn't insure me at all. Bennetts do come out cheaper generally but are severely lacking in options like assistance and legal cover. Spend a few hours calling round for quotes and Carole Nash will always try to match the lowest, so long as it's similar cover.

When I had my 125 I got all my best quotes through Rampdale.

I insured TPFT with legal cover, which was pretty good with the 2 claims I had with them. Everything went smooth.

Thats a good point actually.

Going through the insurers top of Google including Carole Nash, and entering my details (22, 0ncb, just obtained license) and a fictitious 600cc sports bike, e.g. r6 or cbr, the quotes TPFT are all coming out £1000+.

Thats with motorcycle direct. All my friends are a similar age and we all pay around the same amount, others with NCB pay less again.

edit: I think my insurance is just below £500, includes use of other bikes, breakdown cover and euro cover. Fully comp was a fair bit more, thats on a 1999 R6.

Depends a lot on what bike you go for, I guess. I'm with Carol Nash, 1 years NCB on a BMW K75RT, £300 TPFT or thereabouts. When I first looked at getting a Beemer I looked at insurance for the RS, and it was near £500 - I guess because it had 'sport' in the name instead of 'tour'. No difference between the bikes other than the fairing.

Carole Nash were cheapest for me.

2002 SV650, parked on drive in a bad area with no security, 25 years old with license less than a month - £415 TPFT including breakdown cover.

You swine! :P Insurance is a joke :(

Just done another quote to see if it was the same, it came out at £470TPTF, in an NE34 postcode (not a great area really). Thats me 22, I put no NCB.
