Someone mentioned renault aswell. Are the big car firms not interested in this then?

To use their anology there is no real advantage of a piano over a broomstick, instead you want to control the broomstick better (Hence valvetronic/VTEC/VVC/VANOS/iVTEC in the past).

I dont know if the propose system has variable lift either? to me they seemed to press home the benefit of individual valve phasing (not really sure of the benefit of this) and 'square cam' isn't ideal for inlet port velocities

Fiat's Multi-air system is brilliant.

Ultimately though, mechanical systems are inherently reliable.

Currently systems give 85% of the gains this offers but much simpler.

Heat recovery has more potential as the next concern for engine efficiency - theres enough going down the exhaust!

Why do manufacturers still use a belt, rather than a chain? Some engines have been using it for years. Is it to do with the slight expansion of the head when at operating temperatures?
