The is no "outside lane" in the US. You just drive in whichever lane you want and under/over take.

Not true at all. There are many two lane roads with signs saying "keep right". :)

Indeed, it's all state dependent, when I've visited our US office and been driving in North/South Carolina I was warned that slow moving ve-hick-ells must keep right, and everyone generally sticks to the left lane for overtaking in daily driving.

In fact, here is a list:

For example, in Arkansas: "Law prohibits obstructing traffic by driving continuously in the left lane."

Still, the guy was a knob and deserved what happened (considering no one was seemingly hurt).

I assume he was going too fast for the corner, pushing himself onto the wrong side of the road?

Yup. My uncle is a retired paramedic and also a biker, so I sent him this video the other day and he was telling me he had to visit quite a few scenes were bikers have over cooked it into a corner that suddenly turns very sharply and either ploughed straight on into a wall / hedge / lamp post / house or one of the worst ones he went to was two fellas who'd not known the local roads, went too quickly round the corner and both drifted straight into path of an oncoming car. He said they both survived, but needed a lot of pinning back together.
