Motorway speed limit could be raised to 80mph

Ahh great, just when fuel prices are going through the roof they want us to burn more by going faster.
Not to mention the amount of morons currently on the road.
This also flies in the face of suggestions to LOWER it a few weeks ago due the that very reason..

Stricter driving tests that includes discipline on motorways should be mandatory before this is put into place IMO.

1. Actually teach learners how to drive on the motorway.
2. Enforce better motorway discipline.
3. Introduce higher fines for driving incorrectly/breaking laws.
4. Increase speed limit to 80mph and 120mph after 9pm.

I don't even get to drive at 70mph when I go see my friend up north because of other drivers incompetence. Instead of taking 3.5 hours, I could have the trip done in less than 2 hours if the above were put in place.

They just mentioned it on wurzel TV.

In addition to what I said earlier... why not use this as the time to do varying speed limits. A base limit of 80MPH which can go down to 60MPH or whatever when it's torrential rain with thick fog and and in the rush hour, and going up to unlimited when it's a clear night at 3AM.

I'll not say what I've had indicated on my car on an empty motorway on an early Sunday morning, but it was a bit past 70, felt alright was only for a short time, but getting to 90mph in the old Mk.4 fiesta was hair raising, but I usually cruise at around 80/90 anyways when possible so if it's raised, all the better.

In saying that, I wouldn't trust some people driving at 50mph let alone 70 or 80 mph.

By a strange coincidence, I heard a suggestion over the weekend that suggests that - if events in the Middle East & North Africa result in oil shortages - the Government might do the exact opposite. The suggestion is that the NSL would then be reduced to 60mph.

Along with this, the risk of drivers choosing to fill up at every possible opportunity and thereby cause long delays at gas stations would be addressed by limiting each fill-up to a maximum value of £10 but charging a fixed price of £10 regardless of the amount of petrol (up to £10 worth) actually put into the tank. This would stop people pulling in to stick 5 litres in - just in case ;)

Both sound like very sensible ideas if we were to end up with petrol rationing.

Sky Lies huh?
HD to boot?
Well, you can't argue with that.

I'm sure that there was a very good reason why Hammond felt compelled to deny an entirely unfounded story. Doubtless, as he implies "The Government has OTHER contingency plans . . ." ;)

Well that IS a relief, they will just apply the NSL to motorways then I guess

In relation to the original post, I was rather under the impression that reduced speed limits had been introduced on the M25 in order to reduce journey times . . . I guess that didn't work out . . . or perhaps Hammomd hasn't been told yet?

For most vehicles this will means 60mph on single carriageway roads and 70mph on dual carriageway roads. It is also 70mph on the motorway network unless otherwise indicated.

LOLFOX

Sorry, had to :p

(Edit: yes I realise you know NSL on dual carriageways is 70 ;))

If he wants to improve productivity and journey times, start educating/punishing people who sit in the middle lane doing 65 when the inside lane is completely clear.

That is what messes everything up. Everyone then has to sit in the outside lane to overtake them, and if one guy decides he's going to overtake at 66, everyone is bollocksed.
