Anyone live/travel on the Wirral here?

A couple of weeks ago they put up 50mph signs along the M53 in the two lane part. They are large rectangle signs which state the max speed. Are they a warning/advisory or is the speed limit actually 50?

I have yet to see anyone slow down though!

Nearly bought a house in Stanney Oaks but went a bit further up the Wirral.

I just don't get the point of showing a suggested speed limit where no one will bother with it. I understand the need for sharp corners ect where there is a need to get people to slow down.

I have seen those limits as well. they just seemed to appear out of nowhere. Perhaps they have been put there in anticipation of the Open (golf), as no doubt, there will be a lot of traffic on the M53 over a 2 week period?

Other then that, I have no idea why they have appeared there ! :)

They're advisory, and everyone ignores them anyway as you say :)

Except on the huge bend where 2 lanes become 3 on the Northbound carriageway, were slowing down is a good idea.

Could be, but they don't look like temporary signs.

Could also be that they are thinking of reducing the speed limit during 'peak periods' That way you can't say you haven't seen the Electronic sign displaying the 50 limit.
More than likely it's some bizzare plan for when the golf decends.

I think they're a way of the local council covering their asses.

Basically, if there have been a lot of speed induced accidents around a certain road, but it would be silly to lower the speed limit, they shot up "advised limits" so if people crash they can say:

"well we advised them to go 50 here".

Probably...
