Mountain bike Aheadset assembly, need a bit of help.

In the diagram the ball bearing touch the rounded part of the cup. This is how I remember it being, although it's been a long time since I messed around with my bike :)

Yup that looks right, the bearings should be touching the rounded bit of the cup :)

Aye, tis correct. If the races holding the bearings were the other way around, then the race would be in contact with the cup and not the bearings themselves, and it would be anything but smooth when turning the bars.

Important things to remember when reassembling are:

1. use lots of grease on the bearings
2. make sure you tighten the top bolt FIRST. Do not overtighten as it says on the diagram, but you need to preload the bearings before you lock the stem in place by tightening the side/back bolts.

Cheers peeps.

It was the top one that had me a bit worried as I whipped it off the bike before really making a mental note of its orientation.

Once again, ocuk saves my bacon! :D
