This is probably one of two things:

A) Stupid
or
B) Unable to be answered unless you own the TV

I'll try anyway.

I just bought the above TV, 32" 1080p blah blah blah. Anyway i chose it because it has the USB input and says you can watch movies from it. I threw a 1080p .MKV onto a USB drive and dumped it into the side of the TV but it said there were no viewable movies on it.

What format should i be using? I can reencode on my PC so it's not an issue to do it, just not sure what I should be going for!

probably divx... but mkv is just a container that can contain a number of different formats so 'a mkv file' is not a definite thing.

My mates 50" lg to our surprise, played xvid/divx h264 mkvs , jpgs and iphone videos all straight off the bat.

You do have to go into the right menu to show the movies , you can choose to view pictures or movies or audio iirc

for file format its a case of RTFM i'm afraid. No way of saying for certain what it will and won't play.

It should play MPEG 4 though - .mpg

Thats a universal and non proprietary format.

As mentioned by whitecrook one mkv file isnt the same as the next esp. when it comes to sound formats. I'm guessing you may have tried an MKV with a DTS sound file? Try one with AC3 or if it is DTS convert it using a free program called: MKV2AC3 .

I'm pretty sure you'll have to hack the tv to enable playback as I will have to on the 450 I just bought and if its like my 690 then the audio may need to be recoded on 1080p

Well i have a movie option on the USB Input menu. It says Photo, Music, Movie (or something) then you select movie and you can browse the directory. the file i'd used just didnt show up so will try recoding it for something else.

DampCat did you check what audio format it is ? Try using a free program called MediaInfo to check it for you.

Hey guys.

Ok I can watch low res .avi files without any issue, but high res .mkv wont play at all. i tried recoding them to .avi using mkv2vob, DivX Plus Converter and Handbrake but nothing appears to be working. I'm a bit at a loss now.

I got a PS3 recently so im going to explore watching them through that instead, see if it helps, but using the TV alone would be useful too so im still up for advice?

DJ, i'll check the audio format too.

The ps3 doesn't play MKV files without some conversion/remuxing. If you want to play MKV's easily and hassle free I suggest getting a Western Digital TV.

I have exactly the same menu on my 42pq6000 and it only plays SD avis / divx files.
