Whilst not a true story, Stanley Kubrick's 'Paths of Glory' pays great attention to detail (as was Kubrick's nature) and Winston Churchill himself said that it was an accurate representation of trench warfare and the 'sometimes misguided workings of the military mind'. More than worth a look.

As pretty much everyone else has said World at War is very good.

If you're after regular films then for WWII:

The Longest Day - based on the Normandy landings showing the view from both sides.

Tora Tora Tora - the lead up and the execution of the attack on Pearl Harbour which brought America into the war.

Battle of Midway - the turning point of the Pacific war.

As for Africa yeh I have no idea? Maybe Germany invaded africa but why? I will soon fidn out.
The British, in Egypt, started hostilities with Italy, in Libya, when the Italians declared war. The Germans got involved because the the Italians were routed and Hitler didn't want to see Italy (and Mussolini) humiliated.
