somone is asking me to help them move from one exchange hosted email provider to office 365 (2 users)

i have never done this before, is it complicated?

assuming i back up the email and calendar, what settings will i need to change ?

i was just reading that before you posted.. :)

thanks

by the sounds of it , it is easy enough. im just worried to mess it up

the only thing is the current exhange is not in office. its hosted somewhere else and the guy is not being very helpful

TBH for two users your best bet is just exporting their current profile to a PST and import it into the office 365 profile, the only issues you will have are with the auto-complete which never seems to import properly, You can use NK2Edit to export it (possibly to an NK2 file) then import it using the import NK2 command, you'll also need to delete any internal addresses from auto-compete which is easy to do, just start typing it in the To: box and delete when highlighted.

Do you have direct access to the domain itself?

im ok with doing that.. but not sure how complicated setting up the other settings are to get the 365 working

i will have access to the domain, just will not have co-operation from the existing exchange hoster

Setting up O365 is pretty straight forward; most 'difficult' part is validating and assigning the domain name (you'll need access to the DNS records of the domain) to the account. Once that's done, it's then just a case of purchasing additional licenses and creating mailboxes for other users.

Then do what 16-Bit has mentioned for importing mail into O365 - export the current mail from Outlook, remove account, add O365 mailbox account, import mail.

Btw, if they're just after a hosted Exchange solution then look at the Exchange Online plans ('Plan 1' i believe) - it's just vanilla Exchange (50GB mailboxes), no MS Office included but it's around £2.50 (ex VAT) per mailbox per month.

As visibleman says DNS is the hardest part of this, office365 is simple to use and setup for what your doing.

Yea they seem to hide the cheaper versions https://products.office.com/en-gb/exchange/compare-microsoft-exchange-online-plans and the other options are here.

I wouldn't recommend removing the old account until the DNS update as fully propagated, just create a new profile and set the option to choose which profile you want to use on startup.

What version of office do they have? They'll need at least 2007 to get the full use out of office365.

Thanks visibleman.. they do want the office part too

16-bit one is on 2007. one on 2010 but they will be moving to the latest 2013 the comes with it? and thanks for that link, it will come in handy in the future

Just to update the thread:

i set up brand new office365

took a backup of the old email/contacts/calendar to a pst file and restored it

relatively painless, took a while working throught the settings but overall quite straight forward

thanks for all the help
