Hi,
Anyone know any decent flats for rent in Bristol around £500? It's certainly an expensive city....

Which are the better areas, I've been recommended Clifton as it's close to the uni... any other suggestions?

THANKS IN ADVANCE  :D

Can't help you much with regards to flats I'm afraid.

Clifton is a nice area, and is pretty close to uni, the city centre, and Broadmead, but it's fairly expensive as far as I know.

Clifton is one of the most expensive area's in Bristol.

Im renting a house on the edge of town connected to it by the motorway, it takes me under 60 seconds to get into the centre if theres no traffic, red lights, or speed limits. The renting of my house is about half your budget per person.

Avoid St. Pauls like the plague. Otherwise, its quite a nice place. Redland and Clifton are areas that are close to the university areas and bars, but they are expensive.

I'm moving into Clifton on the 1st September, woohoo :D

£500!

good luck, there might be some gems to be found, but at this point in the year i doubt it.

the centre of bristol isnt cheap, maybe look a bit further afield. bedminster / brislington are 2 close places that spring to mind that would be cheaper.

I live in Brislington so any questions then fire away.

I do live in the "posh" part though, there are a few not so nice parts.

cant say i ever knew there was a posh part :P

Where are you going to be working?

You don't want to be on the wrong side of the M32 as it's a nightmare to cross it at rush hour. It used to take me over an hour to get from Kingswood to Redland on a morning.

EDIT : Just re-read your post, I assume you're wanting to be near the Uni cos you work/study there?

The Cotham and Redland areas tend to be full of students. Clifton is a bit pricy (unless your Dad's the PM of course).
Totterdown has improved greatly in the last five years but I suspect the buses may be a bit awkward for getting up to the University.

I lived in St Pauls for 2 years, nothing wrong with it all. Cheap rent for a great flat close to town, just didn't really wanna walk on my own too late at night but never needed to anyway, just drove if necessary. It's got great atmosphere and loads going on.

Depends what you're after mate and depends what sort of guy you are? Are you new out of home and need to live in Redland/Clifton areas or can you handle Gloucester Road or maybe even Easton or St Pauls? Hotwells is nice and affordable and close to Bristol Uni Campus's, where are you going? UWE or Bristol?

Has it got be central bristol?

I use to live in Portishead!

Duno what it cost as i lived there kidna with my fokes (they bought the house i looked after it yeah right and they jet setted about)

It's all down to if you can drive or not

I have lived in St Pauls, Easton, St George, Barton Hill and Clifton and the best area i lived in was St Pauls.!! Fantastic place ended up meeting Ronnie Size and 3d from Massive Attack and going to a jam session with them. As has been said it is kinda ruf but no where nearly as bad as it was 10/15 years ago, yeah there are still working girls on the streets at night and there pimps just around the corner but aslong as you keep your head down and dont go looking for trouble it wont find you. I have walked (at night or early morning) from my brothers house in St George to my place in St Pauls so many times and never had any trouble. (probably becouse of people my bro and i use to hang around with.

I live in Yate (a town 12 miles outside of Bristol city centre).

If you are talking about UWE, It's easy to access UWE from here, easier than from the centre TBH.

It's a pretty good town with plenty of facilities, and housing is cheaper than Clifton and other central areas. Like any town there are some crap areas, but on the whole it's pretty good here.

EDIT: Nothing wrong with St Pauls and Easton, like has already been said these places have a great atmosphere. They may not be for everyone though.

If anything I would avoid Hartcliffe and Southmead.

Another vote for Clifton, Redland and Cotham. My favourite parts of the city, i'm sure places like St Pauls are ok, but personally I wouldn't feel comfortable.

Give you an idea though, i'm in clifton with my gf and it's 650 a month for a nice sized flat. And that's a pretty decent amount for what we've got.

Why are you moving to Bristol? You mentioned the uni, are you a mature student? If that's the case you could probably live in halls while you look for a house (whether you stay the whole year or otherwise).

After the last experince i had of rididng me motor bike through St pauland shoot out i don;t think i'd wana lvie there or near it what so ever!!

Clifton is uber nice!

I'm a part time post grad at the University of Bristol, and work part time near Glos, but luckily get paid full-time salary :D . Living in the centre would be nice, but not for £650, it would only leave me about £700 left a month (and then theres council tax, bills, broadband! etc...).

Where abouts is redland and cottham? (new to bristol so in relation to Physics building).

All the university buildings are in clifton but bordering on redland and cotham. So anywhere in either would be close enough to not be a problem.

Can you not move in with other people?

I might end up moving to Bristol and i'll move in with others if i can. It would cut rental down to £350/£400 in Clifton, and allow you to meet new people!

On a serious note Brislington is nice and it's about a 10min bus ride into the centre, with buses every 5-10mins on average.

just don't let people know your a Gashead around here you may get shot at. :p
