"The MPAA defines a home theater as any home with a television larger than 29" with stereo sound and at least two comfortable chairs, couch, or futon. Anyone with a home theater would need to pay a $50 registration fee with the MPAA or face fines up to $500,000 per movie shown."

Now this is a little silly to say the least. I wonder what they will think of next .

I thought it was 12 chairs. I would think thousands across the country meet their "requirements" as a home theatre, requiring a license.

Just found this too..

"Just because you buy a DVD to watch at home doesn't give you the right to invite friends over to watch it too. That's a violation of copyright and denies us the revenue that would be generated from DVD sales to your friends," said Glickman. "Ideally we expect each viewer to have their own copy of the DVD, but we realize that isn't always feasible. The registration fee is a fair compromise."

we only have one comfortable chair, but we do have 2x 2 seater sofas... where do we stand :p

I love how they make the level so low that it applies to most living rooms. The obvious limit is to say that the fee should be imposed on anyone that charges for entrance to watch tv/films.... Of course, there isnt the possibility to earn as much money, so the RIAA would never go for that.

aye, it isn't april yet, but the article is a joke (litterally).

It says something of the public's opinion of the MPAA and RIAA that people will beleive this though (I suspect the MPAA may need to spend a lot on PR;)).

You don't need to stand anywhere, you've got 2x 2 seater sofas to sit on :p

Sorry :(

So long as that is a joke, otherwise we have a "home cinema" downstairs, despite the fact it is built in TV speakers and sounds pretty rubbish tbh ;)

It's also from jokes-that-some-people-just-wont-get dept. on slashdot :)

As others say it's something I wouldn't put past them but the sheer number of people that meet those requirements means there's no way in hell they'd be able to do that without it being front page news on every paper and headline news on every news channel!

i actually believed this. think wolfy might be right; they need to get some positive PR!

The bill would require that any hardware manufactured in the future contain technology that tells the MPAA directly of what is being shown and specific details on the audience. The data would be gathered using various motion sensors and biometric technology.
roffles!
