Hey all hope all is well. After a long debate over a 660ti and a 7950 i chose the 7950 for the oc potentisl. I'm just really am confused between these two cards and I don't know what to get I'm in to overclocking to full potential so what will be best for this?

I know this may sound stupid but this morning the msi 7950 was on a deal for £239 and now it's listed for £263 :( is it possible to ring up and ask for the discounted price as I'm a day apart. I know it sounds really stupid but I'm a student on a budget lol.

Don't get the TF3. You'd be far better off getting the HIS 7950 iceq boost over that. The cooler is a million times better (performance and acoustics) and it's already overclocked, for less than the TF3

So with oc potential I can take the his hd much higher than the tf3? However, the slightly more overlock on the his doesn't really bother me as I want to oc the card I to 1100 ish zone

Both coolers seem to cool fairly equally, at least in the review I've linked.

You'd have to find other reviews with higher overclocks to see how they cope with the extra heat.

And then it's a bit of a lottery.

You could end up with a golden GPU, an average one or a poor one from either manufacturer.

1,100 MHz doesn't seem unreasonable for most HD 7950s with a bit of voltage tweaking.

Yeah you got a good point there. So out of all the 7950s you will chose the his ice? I thought the msi tf3 was the most favourable card among buyers lol

Maybe the TF3 copes with an overclock better.

Based on the videos I linked the IceQ seems the more pleasant of the cards to live with.

The IceQ exhausts the hot air out of the case and the TF3 exhausts it into the case.

The TF3 has a 3 year warranty, the IceQ only 2.

The IceQ comes with more free games if they're of interest to you or you can get a few quid back selling them on.

I'd try and wait for the opinions of some people who own the cards.

If you're not in a rush then maybe something will come up on a Today Only offer (9am Mon-Sat) or This Week Only (Wed AM).

Yeah thanks for your help mate. I'm not in a rush I can wait up to a week. But it's a shame It went up by 23 quid today:( I was looking at the tf3 all week lol. What a bummer!

^ This Week Only offers change on a Wednesday morning so unfortunately that's why you missed out.

Please remove the name of that place you were planning on selling Sleeping Dogs on as mentioning competitors of OcUK isn't allowed.

Oops sorry didn't know :s What about the sapphire hd vapor -x oc? How does this compare

Someone did say the Vapor-X was voltage locked but I think they were mistaking it with the Sapphire HD 7950 OC.

If you're buying a HD 7950 then you probably can't go wrong with any of those on offer but there are a few to perhaps avoid.

The ones I'd personaly give a miss are the £240 cards from HIS and Powercolour (unless you want to save £20 and get one which sounds like a hair dryer) and the Sapphire OC as it seems to be voltage locked.

That leaves the TF3, IceQ boost and Vapor-X.

As far as I know they're not voltage locked.

You don't need the Sapphire FLEX unless you're buying it with the aim of running 3 DVI monitors without buying adapters.

The range at OcUK seems to have shrunk quite considerably recently.

Maybe there's a shortage, I don't think were due the 8 series cards for a little while yet....

I have owned both the TF3 and the IceQ by the way.

The TF3 was probably a bit better build quality. But the cooler was pants, just watching TV via my usb tuner it was at 54C (0-10% usage). It was very loud and hot in comparison to the HIS at 40C being pretty much silent.

In gaming, again the HIS was quieter and a little cooler. TF3 was generally around 73C, the HIS at 69C.

The HIS spins up to 100% for a couple of seconds on boot, which is annoying, but drops down to near silent quickly.
I am fussy with sound and my PC is very very quiet, so I may be a little too critical :)

But in my opinion the HIS was the better overall card.

Those temps aren't bad. Others are saying temps are much higher on full load?

I'm very happy with my TF3 (note it is rev 1 not the 7970 pcb).

If I use heaven with the fan on auto the temps have never gone above 71 degrees while testing my overclocking.

Quiet at idle although generating noise under gaming load obviously but I wear a headset so not a concern for me.

My sample overclocks nicely without having to hike the voltage too high either :)

thanks all for your suggestions! There both good cards but im just interested in the oc potential. However, i just stumbled upon the sapphire 7950 vapor-x. Any suggestions on this?

Thanks for your input mate but how was the overclocking between the two cards?
