Well it looks like we are just 26 days away form seeing the first Hydra chip intergrated onto a mobo.

For those that need a catch up on what Hydra is..... in brief a company called Lucid Logix where funded by an unknown source *cough* intel *cough* to make something that would give graphics cards full scalability. To give you some idea here is how it works currently:

You buy 1 gfx card @ £300 and get 100% performance you add another £300 card and stick it in SLI or Xfire and you might gain say for arguments sake 50% (50% would be a very good gain btw) so in theory out of your second card you getting about £150 worth of performance if you want to do it in money terms.

Lucid allows you to get 100% scalability.....this is not all the best is yet to come. Its not tied into nvidia or ATI so you can choose to crossfire or SLI and like the current ATI range you can now pair nvidia cards up regardless of model for example a 9800gt can be in theory "SLI'd" with a 285GTX or anything you may have lying around.

Now the biggest thing.....are you ready......you will be able to use ATI and Nvidia cards together in what i've decided to call Crossli.
As im sure you can appreciate if this technology works as it should this is going to be a massive turning point in the not only the graphics card arena but in computing as a whole.

How long before you buy your computer then buy a shuttle style case that links to the PC that you fill with graphics cards for gaming :D

Well the clever guys at lucid have now released hydra 200 chip which MSI have intergrated into a P55 board with 3 PCIe sockets.

This technology has been known for over 12 months now but finally we will be able to actually use it ourselves.

Clever move by intel really as it pretty much makes nvidia's chipset days numbered, not there is any point in buying a nvidia chipset anymore anyways.

Whats everyones opinion on this?

My opinions are vague curiosity, and annoyance that it's called big bang. I don't want a motherboard that goes bang.

I believe the nvidia + amd is planned but not yet possible, it'll certainly be impressive if achieved

Yea, Im rather dubious about it all and surely there is still some dependance on how the games are coded?

As for ATI and Nvidia cards working together... Im even more dubious of that haha. What about this recent problem with certain games having extra features if your runninf an Nvidia card but them being disabled with ATI cards. What if you have one of each? :p

All seems great and if bench tests prove they're claims, a very big congrats to them and I'll be intrested in upgrading. Until then, the pesamist in me is very much unsure

hmm im the same i,m not sure how that will work really, how do you install 2 differant drivers if you use ati and nvidia cards unless they going to do drivers as well.

Nvidia remove features from games upon detecting ATi cards...but are now planning to allow their cards to be paired with ATi cards...lolwut?

Sounds Brilliant ...but would Nvidia / ATI die hards really want to mix cards. If you mixed 2 different cards and 1 was slightly slower then the other would this not cause slowdown or other issues (especially where lower GPU functionality exists ).

If you had a gpu die where you had 2 different cards....would ATI / Nvidia be just as happy to RMA..or would it be you did not follow best practise....tough?

Of course I like the idea of it fully utilizing the second card fully....

Im guessing you use lucid drivers so that will be interesting

Besides the promise of much better scaling than usng Crossfire or SLi, the main attract ion is you can just add any second to what ever one you have already - got a 4890 and want a 5870?- no need to sell your 1st card for a loss anymore.

The 2 cards run independently in a Hydra system, so issues. In fact this would seed to be best practice, rather than to tie 2 cards togeter with SLi or Crossf.

SLI-Fire I think is more catchy :)

Have been reading a bit about this on some tech websites. And it would certainly be something I would be interested in come my next upgrade.

Bound to be some teething problems though. But that's to be expected with any new tech.

It does sound very interesting ...just ordered new Asus i7 mobo...so will be a few years before ( I am allowed) to invest in this...(hopefully any teething issues will be well gone by then)

If ASrock do a 775 board based on something like a p35/p45 chipset I may give it a bash.

The though of a £300-400 side grade to I5 don't really appeal.

I might upgrade to a hydra chipset when they start appearing on more boards. Im in the middle of my current system cycle with q6600 and P5K. So I might be time to move over to i5/7 when they appear in numbers :)
