MSI Calls Out Gigabyte for "Not True PCIe 3.0"

rofl the hilarity.

1. The first slow of any P67 board etc will support gen3 PCI-E as its a direct link to CPU.

2. Gigabyte at no point have said that each and every slot supports Gen3, only that the boards support it.

So it looks like MSI have actually had their own pants down in this part because if you dont have IVYbridge you dont have Gen3 PCI-E so whos advertising isnt as clear cut as it could be now?

Hmmm

MSI have been using Ivy samples by what they've said.

Interesting in that article MSI are electrically testing their Z68 to a P67. Not even same chipset.

Its a bit *** for tat and doesn't put me off Gigabyte boards considering its a competitor. If it was from a company with no links to MSI or motherboards then maybe its more credible.

If in fact its true still don't care PCIE2.0 is still more than enough I've read.

Maybe someone should highlight MSI's "boot loop of death" to them.

bit schoolyard stuff reporting is it not ?

you do need more than just the switches, there are a few BIOS changes, the switch chips and a whole bunch of PCB changes too but our boards have had all the necessary alterations. The switches are just the most obvious way to spot if Gen 3 is available.

You can get Gen3 support without switches to.

Some motherboards only have a single 16X PCI-E slot, that all 16PCI lanes goto from the CPU socket without passing through any switches, so you get 16X gen3 slot when an Ivybridge CPU is installed.

Some motherboards support sli/crossfire at 16X/4X with the top slot getting all 16X lanes direct from the CPU socket again without passing through any switches.

true but there is a change of capacitor and resistor that will need top be made to meet PCI-Express Gen3 spec, whether a switch is involved or not

Sure about this?, I heard the difference between the PCI-E2.0 and PCI-E3.0 signal was just a different type of compression of the signal from the Ivybridge CPU to the socket. It also uses less overhead so thats also where there is a boost in performance from.

And again who says you need PCI-E gen3 switches and different capacitors and resistors? - http://www.ecs.com.tw/extra/pcie3/pcie3.html - they say all their boards support it with just a BIOS update.

Oh, P.S, your PR department needs to do a better job - http://www.techpowerup.com/151718/MSI-Calls-Bluff-on-Gigabyte-s-PCIe-Gen-3-Ready-Claim.html?cp=7
