*****MSI Gaming Laptops - Stock Secured, get your XMAS Orders in NOW!*****

I'm seriously interested in the GX660..just for the spec if anything..but surely if you were to game on one of these for a while wouldn't it get so hot it'll do it's self some damage?

If MSI continued their great work on laptop heatsinks and cooling, then you should have no worries.

I own an MSI GT627, which never goes over 75 degrees during hot summer days when OCed and after hours of heavy gaming.

Just to elaborate how good the cooling is, my laptop goes from 75 down to 40 degrees in 10 minutes max!

Good price for sure.
Shame it comes with the GTS 250M though, because in terms of graphics power it leaves the GT640 behind the older GT627.

Did have a good chuckle with my brother about that. I did always wonder why all my games were blurry. At least I know the answer now and will be able to play them as they should be when I get my 660 :D

Shame that they (gx640 & 740) are still in that god awful chasis. Ive replaced the chassis on my 620 far to many times, combine that with the amount of give the keyboard has it it and they really arn't a great bundle. Build quality on these isn't great but on the plus side they are cheap as are the spares which are easy enough to get from MSI direct.

Also the replacement parts that msi sent me were far better looking with silver trim rather that that minging red. Personally having owned the 620 I would stay clear but as with when I bought mine the spec is to good to turn down.

On another note my one with a 9600gt in gets silly, silly hot. Mine lasted probably 8 months before getting fed up of the heat, keyboard layout and shoody build quality before replacing it with a acer 5942g and in that time I purchased more spares than the cost of the laptop.

Edit: just looking at the pics and it looks like they may have done a little work on improving the hinges and how the plastic meets metal at the bottom of the screen (just one of the places that fell appart on my old machine) however I dont think I will risk buying another based on that cassis even though I am in the market.

I've owned the GT627 for over a year now and never had any of the problems you mentioned or any other issues with it. So, I am absolutely happy with the machine! :)

Maybe you were just unlucky. Maybe I was lucky. ;)

As for the keyboard - if you are referring to the Fn and Ctrl keys position - so many other notebook manufacturers have the Fn key to the far bottom left, including Apple. I just don't see why people complain about MSI's keyboard layout so much!

Ohh yes the half size of normal half size keys are my main bug bear, the "." if i remember rightly was one of them, also press hard in the middle of the keyboard and your touching the bottom of the machine.

For me... I am a heavy user, I transport it with me every day and use it for 8+ hours a day. Most machines dont last 18months in my hands but the msi set an all time record low, coming only second to an asus f3k which I actually managed to snap clean in half. To be honest it is still used as one of my "get it out for a session when the lads come round" machines which even though its falling appart, manages quite well (I just need to prop the screen up with a makeshift stand).

For a machine thats only just over a year old this is really not a great advert though, especially as it was falling appart after literally a few months.

Thats a concern if the build quality is poor.

I mean im not a thug with my laptop, but its used daily from browsing to heavy gaming and I could be on from 9am for 24 hours plus constantly..... transport wise its just in house, up and down stairs every now and then and although im not rough at all on the keys im impressed at how solid my current laptop feels.

YET at the same time as with all boys, toys need upgrading - and although ive a fair spec machine C2D P7450 2.13Ghz, 4GB, 9600M GT which runs games pretty nicely, id love something to get me to the next level and to be able to play the newer games on top spec.

These MSIs cant be matched for price, nothing near from what ive found :(

That was why I bought it, I paid £800 for the gx620 which was p8400, changed to p9xxx, 4gb, 9600m gt ddr3 and a 1680x1050 screen. Although I loved the real estate for work I just couldn't deal with the constant rebuilds so ended up with the 5942g and a 24" lcd.

The i5 450 and 5650 in this are a fine combo and the build quality is leaps and bounds ahead of the msi with touches like backlit keys, awesome sound quality and a few other things but even this has its down sides like the volume wheel which I seem to hit all the time regardless of what im doing.

Next I was thinking of a custom build Clevo but may end up with something different again. just though I would post my experience. I will happily post some pics of the carnage if anybody is interested.

should have just gone to Specsavers :p

Any other MSI reviews from OCUK users?

Im having a good google... imagine how hard I find it to pick a chocolate bar if picking a laptop is dragging on this long :o

The keys are crammed up, I must agree on that. As for the bending in the middle, it was an issue with the GX620 and the first GT627s. Later in the GT627 production they fixed that.

For heavy-duty use, why don't you go for a MacPro - I can't think of a sturdier chasis?

Apologies for cluttering the thread, I at least hope my 'stupid' questions will maybe help others who may be on the fence...

Anyway, if I may ask, which MSI laptop do you have? And how have you found it usage wise for quality of build etc

Ill hold fire on more questions as I have to make a decision... either grab a bargain on the 660 or regret it!

Hi there

Fantastic news for those who have pre-ordered GX660 laptops, we have just had our first batch of 20 units and as such 20 backorders will be shipping today for this absolutely stunning laptop. We expect another batch of 20 within 1-2 weeks and then a large quantity mid november. :)

Great news! Although I doubt I'm in the first 20, so another 1-2 weeks for me (Hopefully a little quicker).

I wouldn't say the keys are crammed up. I have big hands and I can play games all day with no cramp/discomfort.

I have got the prototype version and the build quality is fantastic. Spend a good amount of tiume been hauled around in a backpack, no signs of wear yet!
