MSI MAG Tomahawk X870/X870E Owners Thread

Yea noticed it's marked as pre... They should make it clearer if it's a beta or not.
I'd consider it as such, and would only flash if you have significant problems not being solved in the current stable version.

Aren't the bios versions that end on 0 considered the most stable, or is that a fairy tale? Can't remember where I've read it.

Wish they would sort the bloody ethernet problem out on the X870E mine's still having issues dropping down to 100mb, having to unplug it turn PC off for a minute or so plug it back in and turn PC back on to get it working again. Though it didn't drop itself it was my own fault unplugging the ethernet cable from the PC when it was turned on.

Does anyone who uses the X870E see this error in event viewer it looks like the certificates for the secure boot are out of date.

Updated Secure Boot certificates are available on this device but have not yet been applied to the firmware. Review the published guidance to complete the update and maintain full protection. This device signature information is included here.

Where and how are you getting that message?

Not sure if it's the same thing but I know Microsoft pushed out new certs in the last patch Tuesday but the certs weren't due for expiration until the summer.

Are you up to date with windows updates?

I have been having some weird issues PC just freezes for about 3 seconds when I have 2 hard drives open at the same time. Nothing up with any drives I have run full hard drive diagnostics on both and not one single error. This has happened a few time but not all the time so I checked inside windows event viewer under windows logs - system this is where this error appears.

It's nothing to do with windows update it's an issue with the wrong certificates MSI have used in the BIOS file, I'm sure someone asked this on the MSI forums but I can't find it anymore.

I get that error in the event viewer on every boot too - no issue with actually using the PC though and certainly no issue with PC freezes/drive issues - so I wouldn't think your issues are connected. Does this post from the MSI reddit help? https://old.reddit.com/r/MSI_Gaming/comments/1qlv73u/secure_boot_keys_update/

Tried that before and I'm still seeing True and I'm using 7E59v2A91.

I wasn't saying this was causing the issue just that I noticed this in event viewer, just that everytime the problem I have this appears at the same time.

The thing that is happening is, say I have 2 drives open I might not even be doing anything with these drives. I could be just looking at the drives open but all of a sudden the PC will freeze and the screen goes black (windows explorer resetting) and things are normal again, his only happens when I have drives open.

What I might do is do a clean format and remove 1 drive at a time see if it happens again.

Anyone else have "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" in their device manager with this board? I've physically removed all internal and external USB connections, updated the chipset drivers, ensured integrated items such as wifi/blutooth and internal sound are off - but this keeps coming back

More USB weirdness, this time I noticed when I had VR plugged in to IO, it started to cause the mouse lag like it did when mouse dongle was plugged in the front and I connected a USB storage. Really unsure what/where that issue lies tbh, I'm hoping it doesn't happen when I have my joysticks plugged in. Don't see how it can be a power issue when I only have 3 devices.

I did some testing with the Occulus USB speed test.

USB 10Gbps Type-A ports (From CPU) - Reported as USB2
USB 2.0 Type-A ports (From GL850) - Reported as USB2
USB 5Gbps Type-A ports (From GL3523 - Reports as USB3 (2.4Gbps it doesn't read higher regardless)
USB 10Gbps Type-A port (From X870 chipset) - Reports as USB3 (2.4Gbps)

Mouse fine when VR in USB3 port (from X870 chipset)
One mouse stops totally when VR in one of the x3 USB USB5Gbps, the other freezes intermittently, all three devices are in those ports.
Mice are fine when in USB2.0 ports and the VR remains in the USB5Gbps.

Don't think I have a USB-C to C cable that will work with the headset but I'll have a look, no idea what conclusion to draw from any of this lol.

USB 40Gbps Type-C ports*/** (From ASM4242) - REports as USB2, I think my M2_2 is set to x2 (which sets the port to x2) as well but I'll check, if it's x4 that would disable the USB40Gbps ports.
USB 10Gbps Type-C port (From CPU) - Reports as USB2.

In Bios, everything set to auto re PCI config, but USB4/M.2_2_Switch is USB4 x2/ M.2_2 x2. I have one drive in M.2_1 and 1 in M.2_4.

The 990 Pro in M.2_2 is r/w at 3.7k/3.2k so that seems it is indeed running at x2.

edit: Moved M2 about, nothing in M.2_2 but USB4 ports still report as USB2 (and charge phone slowly but then changes to rapidly after about 5s).

Fine with powered USB hub. May return it in January but not causing me any real issue currently.

Just curious, did you ewnd up either sorting this out or returning and changing, if so what to..?

Hope it worked out well for you :)
