Would this work and would you like it in next gen consoles? I personally would like it cos I'm a lazy ass when it comes to changing games. Say 6 discs at a time in 1 console

No. Don't care. Next platforms I imagine will be just downloadable content no discs anyway. Or USB drives or something.

There will be physical media for atleast the next two generations.

Easily, the UK and most of the worlds network infrastructure just isn't up to handling games on demand quite yet.

Also I doubt memory is quite cheap enough for 2++TB HDDs.

Next gen will no doubt be blu-ray.

I think the next Sony console will stick with blu ray as they have invested in the tech, but I hope the next Xbox will do away with optical media, the benefits being lower cost, less noise, less heat generated, less power consumption and quick loading times (especially compared to blu ray). For those with slow/no Internet connection or if you prefer a box with instruction booklet, games could be released on flash drives as previously mentioned, or better still to keep costs down you could bring your own USB stick to a games retailer and they upload your game to it. I hope Microsoft go with standard HDD's next time so we can upgrade to our own needs (SSD would be put in straight away)

Would just be commercial suicide imo.

Or the new consoles could be released in two "flavours" one with optical drive one without

Won't EVER happen. MS make a killing off of overcharging on ridiculously small HDD's and people have to just go along with it.

Optical media isn't going anywhere, and a download-only console would severely alienate the retail industry. Sony tried that with the PSP Go and many stores retaliated by refusing to stock it.

Your probably right but if MS and Sony released new consoles download only I don't think they would refuse to sell them and lose out

I'd be happy if they had optical drives but all games where released to download straight away, that way those who want to download only can do while keeping the disk sales and second hand games market alive

There's no money in the hardware though, retailers only really profit from the games.

In any case, before download-only consoles can become a reality, the pricing of said downloadable games needs to be plummet. Nobody is going to go from paying £35 for a new release in one generation, to £57.99 in the next.

Could someone please enlighten me? If Microsoft were to use blu ray would they have to pay some sort of royalties to Sony?

Inregards to a multi-changer aspect, that will never happen, it's an unnecessary expense for any manufacturer.

They wont go download only.
You have a massive retail sector they owuld be destroying in one stroke.

The PSP go was testing the market, it bombed.

MS will have its own proprietary format I think. Like Nintendo does.

Its possible, but i can imagine they would want to support bluray movies. As they're gaining momentum now. I think we're more likely just seeing MS pay Sony Royalties and Bluray being used. Probably cheaper to pay Sony than it is to try and launch a new media type.
