I was just wondering if anyone knows the exact number of bones and muscles in the hand and in the forearm - I have been looking at various sites and I seem to be coming up with different numbers :(

*scratches head* uhhh...anatomy...right hang on here goes : (I'm not entirely sure from where to where you want counting but):

Radius, Ulna, 8 carpals, 5 for your thumb, 4 each in 4 fingers =31.

Muscles is a little bit odder to count just from the elbow to your hand: But i reckon there's about 14.

Whilst were here, are there any muscles actually in the hand? The fingers seem to be powered by muscles in the forearm (not space in the hand to generate that sort of power I guess), but is the muscle for the thumb in the hand?

go research your own homework?

Your finger and thumb bit is a little confused - it's 2 in the thumb, 3 in each finger and 5 metacarpals, so 29 total.

intrinsic hand muscles - OTTOMH, interossiae, lumbricals and the muscles of the thenar and hypothenar eminences... My anatomy's a bit rusty though now - it was 5 years ago I knew all this.

Don't worry, its not my homework - we don't get homework telling us to find out how many bones and muscles there are in the hand and arm when I am in the 3rd year of my Computer Science degree :p

A little off topic, but I discovered the other week (after and xray for a broken toe) that I am missing a couple of bones in my foot.

Must have a weird thumb then cos not only can I feel it, I can see it moving my arm!

The interesting thing is how they all stay together. I'm guessing muscles and ligaments do it? Its quite bizarre watching a weightlifter raise a massive weight and seeing the 1" steel bar quivering, and I think about the arm bones and the fact they are thinner and more fragile than that bar and it seems impossible. The surrounding muscle must add strength to it I guess, one mistake and you could probably shatter your arms into pieces

Nope, I can't see much in my arm for the thumb. A tiny movement, but probably just skin stretching. The fingers are much more obvious to see.

Thumb= metacarpal + Distal and Proximal phalanges (lol pheobe from friends..), and you have two very small sesamoid bones as well.

I can only conclude that you are either too fat, doing it wrong or just plain weird :p

I'm certainly not fat and have tried wiggling it every way but feel nothing (well, a very small movement mabye)

Must have missed the bit about the thumb sesamoids... Else they didn't make a big deal about it in Cambridge :o , but you're right, and apparently you can fracture them :D
