Music Best Loud ?

i love load music, so much so, ive damaged my hearing in my right ear, years of clubbing, djing, car stereo abuse

Good music sounds good no matter what volume. I'm pretty sure Paul Oakenfold said that, though I might be wrong :p

I agree, don't know who said it but i love Rock/Heavy Metal and find it doesn't have to be loud to be good/enjoyable.

As for you headphone boys, be careful you don't end up deaf - seriously.

As far as live music goes, i've been to several gigs where the volume was too high for the acoustics of the venue to deal with. Best example is whitesanke at the Ulster Hall, Belfast, I think it was 1983 0r 84. I had all their albums, yet so loud did they play that i could not pick out a single tune - it was just a wall of noise. Of course, some of my mates who were drunk thought it was brilliant!

A few months later saw Def Leppard at the same venue and they were excellent - loud but still able to make out every note and tune.

Had my stereo the loudest I've ever had it on NYE (neighbours were having a party too before you comment) and was playing some great house, dnb and a bit of heavy, angry rock. Very good, although I don't think I'll have it as loud for a while to come! It opened up a whole new level which I didn't know my stereo had, and the volume was at 12 o'clock :p Of course music always sounds better when a little drunk too!

Nearly 49 and stood in front of rock bands since 1970 without any damage at all.
The secret is to always have decent equipment.
I now have to have in ear phones so I can hear myself over the band and they are on full but still no problems because the quality is that good.

I recommend listening to Mogwai VERY loud, sounds fricking ace!!

Some music's nice to listen to quietly though. Been listening to Opeth's Damnation album whilst snoozing, thats very nice to do :)

Have to admit i think i'm a little deaf sometimes at the age of 22

Obviously not enough/close enough.

I know several guys (note the plural) who are not far into their twenties who have problems with their hearing due to a decade of gig-going.

Everyone who goes to a lot of gigs should get some decent plugs. I've got some £12 Doc's Pro Plugs (designed for drummers) that I wear at gigs. See through, and you can't see them really.

the funny thing i learned when i was training as a sound engineer is that its useless to listen to music on full wack as your ears become numb after a short period and you are temporarily unable to hear certain frequency's (which makes it very difficult to engineer a track correctly), thus if your listening to quite a complicated piece of music you may actually be missing out on certain parts of it :)

£12 to save your hearing sounds like a good deal to me :) . In fact, it seems absurd to not use them when you consider the problems prolonged exposure to loud sound can cause (not just loss of hearing sensitivity and high frequencies, but tinnitus and other horrible things).

Yeah, we were told to mix our recordings for music tech at lower levels (though virtually nobody did  ). It's often the case that if you mix it quietly, when it is played at more ordinary volumes it sounds very loud/powerful. Something mixed at high levels has a good chance of sounding thin/insubstantial when played back at normal levels.

it pains me to see my friends listening to their music on 99p creative earbuds at full blast when it can be heard over the other side of the room, i cant even get one near my ear the shrilly distorted treble actually hurts  i never have my tunes too loud when using earphones and always use earplugs if i go out clubbing (after a while you get used to them and the music sounds normal anyway)

loud music in a club > cheapo earphones at full bast with EQ set to max, as far as safeness goes

anyyway tune to be played loud:

armin van buuren - control freak (SvD mix)

Orpheus by Ash sounds awesome turned up loud, as does Superstylin' or Whatever, Whenever by Groove Armada

When I'm listening to loud music I can't really get another thought into my head, I'm completely lost in the music.

So, my theory is that the reason people love loud music is the same reason that people like getting drunk

Reign in Blood by Slayer.

Few things come close to the aggression that album exudes at high volumes.

Trance music works best really loud, but years of clubbing have made me more considerate of the damage I may be doing, so now I have noise dampening earplugs for events. Good thing is that you can still physically feel the bass on big rigs :D
