MX5 Replacement - 5-7k

It's got to be an MR2 Turbo. The only car to achieve the holy trinity of cheap, fast and reliable. You can have the pick of the bunch too for your budget. Even 3-4k would get you in a lovely example.

This is a the best one I've seen recently, it's £4,500: http://www.imoc.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=163062

You could also get a freshly imported one for almost 7k too: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1337125.htm

I bought an mr2 turbo last year and they aren't cheap to run. Obvious things on cars this old tend to be clutch, dizzy, ht leads, coolant, cambelt etc. Then you get on to suspension such as bushes top mounts etc.

Also factor in potential for the turbo to die. This is a similar list for most 90 's cars. That 7k mr2 has been on piston heads for nearly a year now...

This is true - with the caveat being that most parts are pretty cheap so if you can do the work yourself it wont' be too much of a financial burden (but isn't that always the case, plus I found mine a nightmare to actually do engine work on).

Not sure I'd be touching the one linked above for £4.5k if i'm honest - as soon as I see dodgy glued on skirts and mesh I start worrying though admittedly it certainly looks nice apart from that.

Evening chaps

Cars I've looked at:
Celica GT-Four - Suspension component costs scary, unknown running costs

This is what i've owned for about 1.5yrs now, I was also 21 when I bought it. I will give you some answers to your questions no problem.

First of all, if you live in a decent enough postcode the fact that it is an import should not be an issue, specialists generally won't insure you either until you are 25+
Luckily, Elephant seem to insure anyone with any car for cheap, they don't seem to care.
At 21 my import was ~£900 on insurance, and this year it is £760 with all mods declared.

Your budget is much higher than these cars currently go for due to the economy of not many people wanting a turbo petrol at the moment and as you rightly stated, the sheer cost of some of the suspension components.
Also, is a 4WD turbo something you want? I gather probably yes if you've been mulling over the 3000GT

Circa £3k will get you a good solid car with decently low mileage with all the work done usually, there are numerous ones for sale on the owners' club (GT4OC) and I wouldn't dare buy the car from anywhere else again due to the awkward suspension setup and rarer nature of the car. Plus on the forum you can search the history of the car which is a big plus to see any previous owners complaints etc.

As a bonus you then have cash leftover to continue saving towards something else, or to start modifying it some.

Performance wise the JDM 1994-1999 GT-Four ST205 is what you would want; 255-275Bhp stock/usual filter, exhaust mods. (Same engine as the same years turbo mr2's.)

If you find a car that has the suspension components replaced recently you should be fine as their lifespan is around 60,000mls.
You want things like control arms/banana arms, figure of 8's to be replaced.
Recent change of clutch is about the only other thing that could be costly due to the engine usually needing dropped to get to it.
Turbo's, it's an 18 year old car, it will have had some use if it's a higher mileage car but just check what it's been tuned to, if you find a standard-ish low miles one it should last some time, it isn't paper.

It would also be beneficial to get a car that was imported quite recently, 2008+ perhaps as it will be less likely to rust with the Japs not using road salt, and freshly undersealed upon import.

Running costs: What would you like to know? You said MPG is irrelevant but I can average 28-35mpg driving normally easily, foot to the floor all the way, who knows 18+ ?
It is good practice to change the oil and filter every 3,000 miles, or every 6,000 if you use high performance oil. I just stick to decent priced oil and change every 3k.
Parts are generally available brand new genuine toyota from the likes of TCB, or anything else on the car can be had from the members of the OC.

I bought one with all the receipts for suspension work etc being done and nothing has gone wrong with it over the last 18 months, apart from the chargecooler radiator bursting when it was -16 degrees or so up here in Scotland last winter; but it was the original 18 year old one so stuff happens. Replacement from the OC cost £35 delivered. Doddle.

Please do ask any questions you have, and sorry for the wall of text...the better you know..
HTH.

My MR2 has beed impecibly reliable for the 10,000 miles I've had it, although my turbo will probably explode on the way home now I've said that. I know that import has been on pistonheads for a while, I was just suggesting you can get a freshly imported one nearly in your budget. So you can have an importer on the lookout for your particular spec/colour and it will be in much better condition that most in the UK.

However they are old now so things will fail, but MR2s in your budget should have been very well cared for.

With my sensible hat on I would suggest you keep the MX5 and save up for something better. If you are bored with your MX5 have you looked into turbo kits?

I hate to **** all over your car dreams, but from the list given in the OP I think you are in fairy land rather than the real world. There is no way a 20 year old student can properly run an 18 year old Supra TT!

Why am I in fairy land?

I am looking for reliability in general, I can afford to repair and run cars, I just would rather not have random £500 bills, for example.

I'm probably not in a typical student situation; my student loan is not my largest income during a year, and by quite a significant margin. After all bills (including petrol at 25mpg), with only food, clothes, etc to pay for, I have approx £500. I can live easily on £40 a week food leaving me at least £300 a month.... currently it gets either saved or spent on things like clothes or going out, which I'd happily tone down if I had a nicer car to run as I simply love cars.

I know that a lot of the cars I said about are totally unsuitable; ie, the TVR, but it's again, a dreamcar which I could potentially afford to buy, but not happily keep running.

Again when the RX8 was mentioned; the fuel is completely irrelevant, and the servicing costs are completely acceptable. The only fear is that I will buy one and it'll blow up, hence the idea of getting a dead one and a warrentied rebuild. Can pick a dead one up for about £1k, £3k for a rebuild and any ancillaries that need doing (coil packs, etc) and I have a modern, good to drive, nice car for 4k.

350Zs are beginning to interest me more and more, but are at the very top end of my budget.

To note, I do not want an Mk2 or mk3 MX5. I think they are all ugly when compared to the Mk1!

The VX220 interests me as I'd love an S1 elise; but I fear that the fibreglass is not suited to the tight parking here, as demonstrated by the multiple cracks on the S2 elise that sits on the road behind my car. Plus don't they leak?

And to randal24; I will do, but I've already got a few people interested in the car! Couple of friends and... my parents, oddly enough. Would need to replace the roof before selling really, mind, the stitched up tear is not the best selling point.

Hey if it's watertight, that's good enough. Need a winter car whilst I work out what to do with the DC2. I miss my Mk1 and crisp winter morning drives!
Certainly a good wake up call. :D Keep me posted.

A 15-20 year old Toyota for £5k misses them 'cheap' by absolutely miles!

There aren't many other 15-20 year old 300bhp mid-engined sports cars you can get at this price. Just because it has a Toyota badge it doesn't retract from the fact that it is cheap for the performance you get.

You could use the same argument to say the Skoda Rapide is a bargain as well, there isn't many others because it was an unpopular drivetrain layout (Though an excellent one) not because the MR2 is some sort of bargain.

It is not cheap. A 1992 Soarer for £1400 is cheap for the performance you get. A 1992 Toyota MR2 for £4.5k is not.
