Hi People,

I know you see lots of these threads, i've also read a lot of them.

Im looking at doing my 1st build and want to keep it sub 1K.

I like the look of the below but having not built a rig before and having a newbie level of knowledge i would really appreaciate your input on what you think are good choices and what you would change.

Its for the usual reason of wanting to play high end games at the highest or high settings at respectable frame rate

Below is my basket (i cant seem to find out how to add with the links and pictures?)

Seem cheap, what am i missing or skimping on?

Also i currently have the following setup

Dell XPS consisting of
i7 860 processor
ATI HD5770
2TB hard drive
(no idea what mobo or any otherparts)
8GB RAM not sure on the frequency

Would it be worth me reusing any of the above?

Many many thanks in advance and look forward to your feedback

tbh i'd drop your current parts into the case you spec'd along with the psu and graphics card.

get an ssd drive to add to it as well.

is your dvd drive a sata connection, could re use that as well.

Thanks for the response that does make my ears happy (eyes) and my wallet!

Not to sure about the dvd drive to be honest i dont know how i would find out.

TBH im a total newbie at building/modding hardware ive never really taken that much notice i was always happy with my xbox but after seeing what PC's can do i cant look at my xbox in the same way! haha

Do you have any idea what MOBO i would need?

I did read somwhere that the i7 860 can be clocked to 4ghz is that true?

Depending on your power supply you could likely just get a new graphics card and get significantly improved results.

Your existing rig is still pretty decent - I'd only bother upgrading if you desperately want to. What you have still good and I doubt you'll see much of an improvement for your £1k spend.

.

mobo you have should be fine moved to the new case.

if your after a new mobo then have a look/post in the motherboard forum to see what they recommend, the 1156 socket mobo's arn't on ocuk by the looks so you'll need to check around for one once you have an idea what your after.

yup, a quick look around and 4ghz seems doable.

however much I love the sapphire 6950 toxic, have to say £260 is deffo in the realms of ridiculous(£248 was on the boarder line). go for the sapphire 6970(£25 more) or msi 6970 lightning(£30), or one of the cheaper 6950s

if you do go the route of keeping your current setup and just getting a new graphics card(maybe a new case and motherboard) I can be quite certain you'll need to upgrade the psu as well. open the case and have a look at the side of the psu to see if you can make out the make/model and wattage.

in respect to ocing a dell I'd highly doubt they use a mb with the capability, d/l and run CPU-z to find the make/model of the motherboard.

the optical drives and hard disks should be sata if you've bought the pc in the last few years, just open the case and look at the cable connecting the hdd/optical drive to the motherboard if it's a thin cable then it's sata, if it's a thick 'ribbon' then it's IDE.

If you are looking around £260 it may be worth reading about the GTX 570, OC UK GTX 570 is at the £260 price point.

It may have the edge on some games, though Oc'ing is limited on this model.
