Hi
Ive always used these forums for answers and now I thought id ask a question, hopefully someone can help me and maybe offer some advice.

Having just put together a new computer (still need to update graphics card) , i thought id try a simple overclock for the 1st time. Ive read a few guides and think ive done it correctly.

My computer specs are:

i5 760 @ 3.3Ghz (stock cooling)
Corsair XMS3 4GB @ 1600Mhz 9-9-9-24
MSI P55A-G55
XFX HD 4770 512MB GDDR5 (@ 830/850 via ccc)
Corsair 500W CX
Kingston 64GB SSDNow V
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB Hard Drive

So anyway after reading a few guides I 1st booted to desktop with everything at default, 2.8ghz and memory at 1333, memory was bought at 1600 but motherboards default is 1333 i think. Everything was fine so I entered the bios and changed only the following.

Disabled Turbo Boost
Enabled X.M.P

Altering these settings set my memory to 1600Mhz and my i5 760 to 3360Mhz, the QPI changed to 5760. everything else was left at normal or auto, including all voltages. Rebooted to desktop, ran prime95 for a few hours and received no errors.

Temps are showing as 28-34 idle , 75-80 when running prime95 on blend test. Using both Core temp and Real temp to check temps.

Now in CPU-Z it reads, core speed 3350.4, multiplier is 21, QPI link is 2871.7Mhz, voltage reads 1.048v. Memory tab says DRAM Freq is 797.7, FSB:DRAM 2:10, 9-9-9-24 , tRFC is 88 clocks.

My questions are
Do all those numbers seem right?
Are the temps of 75-80 too high under full load?
If they are, whats a decent (cheap) cooler?
Can i adjust the voltage to lower temps under full load?

One last thing that is annoying me is in real temp and core temp programs, cpu speed is still going up and down as though turbo boost is enabled, yet cpu-z is showing it as stable 3.3Ghz. Is this normal or again is it something i have missed?

I hope to get a lot more from this cpu once i upgrade to a new cooler and read a few more guides.

Thanks

I run an amd system so cant comment on specifics, all I can say is that you will learn as you go, just dont try to fly to close to the sun too soon and you will be fine.

Still learning about overclocking and my system a year after buying :)

Definately get a new cooler, i've got mine up to 3.8 stable, but the temps are running too high for comfort. 40 idle and up to 78 when pushed. Thats on the stock cooler, the new one is in the post so should be able to see some real drops in temp.

Jeez. Sounds like my i5 rig might be a nice bit cooler than my current i7 860 is! Going to be running the i5 under a Megahalems too, so hopefully I can see a nice drop :p

Its speedstep you need to disable as it alters the speed of the CPU under load/idle as well as turboboost (which increases the mutliplier --> more GHz)

Just to add to what has been posted,
Dont use XMP as its bad imo and cant overvolt settings.

Manually set the volts,speed/multiplier and timings as per spec for you ram.
