My 4790K died Christmas day

So my 4790K has died on Christmas day.
I have tested everything and the only common thing is the CPU. I am just waiting to find a very cheap 1150 CPU to test my motherboards(s) and other bits n bobs.

This just sounds like bad luck and a bit of a sad story... no there is more..

My CPU died 20 days after the warranty expired......

So I am lost at what to do other than make a keychain out of it..

Thank you for all your thoughts and condolences.

She was running stock clocks after a couple of years working hard with an OCUK 4.4 OC. Cooling was German air and very efficient.

For were it not 21 days earlier then she could have been resurrected but alas, she bailed on Christmas day....

She will be more than missed and never forgotten.

try an intel RMA, they have the best customer support i have ever experienced. they might not replace totally free but might offer a discounted unit. worth a shot

I have been in such a tiz over this as it is a very important PC for me, that I never for 1 second thought to do that. I am genuinely thankful you suggested this.

Using my FPO number the intel website says my processor is still warrantied until 29th Feb 2018 and a ticket is in....

Why are you using your desktop on Christmas Day?

It was moved so we could eat at the table (it is in our living room) when it was moved back it would not post.

So in theory it is the wife and the spawns fault.

DId you try removing the CMOS battery for 5 mins? It seems really strage that the system won't post after a simple move...unless somebody spilled some beer in your PC and 'forgot' to tell you...

Pretty much done everything that could prove it was something other than the CPU. I then rebuilt it on another motherboard and exactly the same behaviour. So not MB, PSU, memory.

And no beer spilt either...

I would never have thought it was the CPU. First thing I did was change the PSU as that seemed logical then went through all the usual trouble shooting steps. Then this weekend rebuilt with a new MB, tested RAM in another PC, used a different Drive and finally 3rd PSU and each time the same behaviour of not getting to post just fan loop. I would look to something else but the fact all the components have been tested and or replaced, the only common point of failure is the CPU and that fits with failure to post.

Well the warranty is expired. Had a nice email this morning, so that is that.

Never mind. Will see if I can pick up an i5 on the cheap.

If the FPO number stated that it was inside warranty what was their reason to refuse ? were you overly honest about the purchase date ?

Unfortunately it is OEM and they do not cover it.

However jumping ship back to AMD as Ryzen is the best bang for the buck for what I use my PC for.

Still royally hacked off though... 20 days

My i7-4790k also died (well almost) recently. It would boot into BIOS, but not into Windows or any OS. Any other CPU I used worked just fine, but not the 4790k. I did send it for RMA since it was within the Warranty period, but I was told that OCUK's testing found it not faulty as it booted up fine on their tests. I can only assume they didn't boot into an OS with it, hence they didn't find it with any issue and sent it back to me.

Considering how expensive an upgrade to something newer is, I decided to stick with LGA1150 and bought a Xeon E3 1231 v3 for a reasonable price. I get performance close to what my 4790k used to do and some piece of mind.

I'd recommend you also go for something similar, if not a non-overclockable i5, since the K spec i5s that are compatible with 1150 are sold out. I wouldn't recommend an upgrade, especially with these RAM prices. It's much cheaper spending a couple hundred bob on a compatible CPU than it is several hundred on a CPU, mobo and RAM.

TLDR stick with a 1150 CPU

I would have stuck with 1150 if I could have gotten hold of a Processor with a warranty. I will be building a Ryzen 1600 that in total will come to £350 and I will get 3 year peace of mind on all the parts.

I loved my 4790k, it was a total monster and I know the 1600 is slight down grade, however if it can run GTA then I will be happy. However my PC is a lot more to me than just gaming as I have very very bad sight and it is my window to the world.

As for the MB and Mem, I will most likely build another PC with a cheap i5 if one pops up on MM then my Daughter can have that.

I am getting quite knackered now, so this will defo be the last build I actively take part in. Having the warranty will give me peace of mind.

I.e. brand new (and not 2nd hand)? Like the Xeon E3 1231 v3 I bought (plenty still available new)? I've seen benchmark videos of the [email protected] being a few FPS behind the [email protected]. However, it can only be overclocked by BLCK and that's generally not recommended. Turns out the Xeon is made to run especially cool and efficient, so it should last a while. Especially if you leave it on stock (comparable to a stock 4790k).

I'm just giving you an alternative (cheaper) option to buying a whole new setup. Plus I'm not confident that a 1600 can keep up with 4790k on all games at this time. Some games really depend on the higher clockspeeds of fewer cores. But Ryzen is a good choice nonetheless. But I'd wait a little if you're buying Ryzen, price drops are around the corner (new CPUs) and you could pick up a 1600X for the same price.

Edit: Checked warranty on the Xeon and it's 3 years where I bought mine

I took the decision to switch purely on the basis that the Ryzen had dropped in price and the fact it is all warrantied.

Yep it was an outlay but at the same time I am now happy that I have 3 years without any issues with returns.

If I can persuade my daughter I will take on your advice with the Xeon and she can have a cracking PC.
