Just moved house and brought my lovely toshiba 37" CRT, it's a pita to move but it made it.

Set up all my kit, fired it up and everything is all wonky on the screen. It's not just things i'm inputting into it, even the OSD is a wonk. I suspect it's taken a knock in the van :(

Is it ruined? Can i recalibrate / straighten it. Is there a hidden menu on there that toshiba have hidden from me?

I know i should get a new screen, but one wasn't budgeted for this month!!

:(

found the service menu.. but am not sure what it all does.

Yeah happened to my mates before, during moving it. Most likely knocked or magnetized by the van. Tough break mate, pretty much dead. :(

Could be it needs degaussing but I don't know if you can do this from the service menu but I doubt it. You could try Toshiba Technical Support: 0844 8560730 for some free advice. :)

degaussing will cure problems caused by moving set when on / magnetic interference. Set should do itself when turned on although it's a fairly common point of failure on crt's and you don't notice until something happens to mess with the screen. turn the set off, leave for an hour and turn on, it'll sort itself if magnetism is the problem and the set is ok. You can manually degauss a tube with a degausser - local tv shops will have one (independants best bet) and would do it for a small fee.

If the picture is good and you've got a colour shift it's possible it's had a bang and deformed the shadow mask. This is a fine metal grill inside the screen which basically ensures electrons fired off the gun hit the right colour only. If it's damaged it's new tube time. Expensive unless tosh can put you intouch with a service agent who's got one in stock (unlikely) and wants rid.

It's possible your set is too near something magnetic and unshielded? power cables (unlikely) or hi fi speakers. if so move tehm and power off to cold and on again.

Used to hate those 33 and 37 4:3 tosh sets. They were fab in their day but were a real pita to install service due to size and weight. Hope this helps. If your stillstuck let me know, maybe a piccie of problem will help.

theres nothing near it that i've put there, but i suppose its possible that there is something on the otherside of the wall..

ok, couple of pictures. this shows the 'wonk'

and here is the gap at the top right of the screen. there is a slight amount of discolouration around this corner.

the rest of the screen is fine, no colour shift, no distortion from magnets etc and it doesn't flicker.

made a mistake earlier, it's a 36" 16:9, a 36ZP18P.

def a tilt issue, screen is fine :)

it's been awhile and I can't recall tosh service settings.... there will be a tilt in there.

last one of those I saw was dropped by courier about 4 feet. Smashed cabinet but worked perfectly. I called it but the business owner blagged it to sell to a school 'chum' from way back when. Made me giggle when the guy didn't pay a penny and moonlight flitted with it.

I remember my toshiba 32" widescreen CRT having a tilt...

In the shop the TV was fine (no tilt)....Got it home it then had a bad tilt...Took it back to the shop and again there was no tilt on it in the shop...

They replaced it with another brandnew one and it did the samething .

i also posted this on the av forums, and they've said that the scan coils may have moved. I'm not sure what they are.. so dunno if thats a possibility.

possible, I'm not an engineer, just used to manage a few. Afaik the coils are the copper 'coils' mounted on the rear of the tube (electromagnet). When we fitted new tubes they used to need removing off the old tube and refitting / aligning. Even so the small tilt should be correctable using the software. Still waiting on an answer from some old friends. Have you tried tosh direct or a tosh dealer?

hmmm, not good news.

early answer is that there is no electronic tilt adjustment on late model toshiba crt's. It needs manually adjusting and whilst not difficult I wouldn't do it.

It's a great tv, if the picture is still nice, bright, clear etc I'd spend the money on having a local tv repairman come and do it. It can be done it situ, they'll need a test patterfn generator ( a real one preferably not a dvd / tape!) and experience of doing it. Where in the world are you? I might be able to recommend someone.

Who did you used to work for we may have crossed paths in the past.

If its scan coils that have moved DONT try and do it yourself.

Its easy for an engineer but its very easy for non technical to balls it up completely

The front of CRT are about an inch thick safety glass but the back very much Isn't
Scan coils are generally just hot melt glue'd into postition so can come loose with a bang.

started off with 5 star buying group which went on with others to form CI(H), employed by fishers, north notts based branches in mansfield sutton kirkby huthwaite and 3 round nottingham - ruddington area. Finished with spavens and out of it completely now, you?

We were based in the North west.

Did you have any dealings with Power network about 9-10 years ago or were you a D&G agent. They did the best team building go-kart days.

Big TV's are actually susceptable to tilt from the magnetic pull of our planet. I used to have a 21inch NEC CRT monitor, and simply rotation the screen on its base would cause tilt like that, but the monitor had a switch on the back which you needed to set depending on the screens direction compared to magnetic north!.

Strange thing is, a lot of CRT's will settle in to a new position, but it can take a week before everything is normal, so just bear with it for a week, if it doesnt correct itself, then you may need to get it repaired, or retire it (insurance job mebee?)
