My boy found a phone on the way home..

In what world is "finders keepers" the right attitude?!?!

Are you still with said woman??

No haven't been with said woman for 3+ years thank **** lol but as my boy spends most of his time at his mums it really is a worrying thought if that's her attitude to bringing him up

The Mum is wrong telling him that as there is such a thing called stealing by finding.
The finder of lost property acquires a possessory right by taking physical control of the property, but does not necessarily have ownership of the property. The finder must take reasonable steps to locate the owner
Stick that in her pipe & explain to the Boy how breaking the law achieves nothing in the long run apart from harm to himself. :)

I think you're in a very difficult position, and I sympathise. I cannot think of any advice that I could give.. because she'll try to use it against you, and it could backfire.

I had thought about asking if the police could send round one of the community support guys to collect it, and thank the boy for handing it in... but while I can imagine a good outcome I can also imagine it being a mistake - and a waste of their time.

Take the phone, turn it in to your local police station, tell your son that "finders keepers" is not a justification for theft and that there will be no arguments on the subject, end of.

If you really want to teach him a lesson, take him to the police station to admit what he has done so he can hear it from a policeman.

Excellent time to teach him empathy. Also he will remember this lesson in future and know who has the better moral compass.

Ask him how much it costs to buy a sense of honesty? You can't buy it, it's priceless and getting rarer and rarer.

Now ask him how much his is worth? Apparently the value of some rubbish phone he found in the street.

I have more respect for an honest ****-smelling wino tramp than a dishonest millionaire with a bunch of flash toys. So should all real men. The former has something the latter can NEVER buy.

LOL - some of the over-reactions on here are funny, it's like reading the comments section of the daily fail.

Yes, he should hand it in - but this massive over the top negative judging is hilarious-(ly stupid).

Don't be so narrow minded, we just make the world we have to live in a worse place for ourselves as well as others if we don't have atleast a basic level of decency.
