My brother thinks that PS3 can handle games better than a GTX 460 @1080p

Funny, I remember when people used to say a dual core PC with an 8800GT is pretty much level with a games console in terms of graphics about 3 or 4 years ago, and now all of a sudden a GTX460 which is about 100% faster or more than an 8800GT is where a PC is equal to a games console. I don't think so!

If you played one, then another at different times you may not notice too much difference, but some games capped at 30fps are horrible to play and games consoles also suffer from a load of jagged edges! Side by side 720 games at 30fps next to it's PC equivalent at 1080 with at least 2XAA and 40 - 60fps+ will look so much nicer to the eye.

Personally as much as I like the multiplayer aspects of Xbox Live and PSN, I would never go back to a games console... Not at least until they update the graphics on them in the next gen iterations.

With the latest Xbox 720 coming out either in 2013 or 2014 (cant remember the dates) they will be using I believe a 5970? Should be interesting if they do that and see what the performance increase will be. Although the expected cost is £400.

And with your comment on never going back to console gaming, I am about to undertake that step :D In theory for a selection of 3 games lol.

Actually the rumour was 6670, not 5970...

Most ps3 games are sub HD 630p, menu is 1080p and the likes of small PSN games. But all the big games like GTA4, BF3, COD are not even 720p COD games do this so they can get 60fps and I think thats the only console game that gets 60FPS all others are capped @30.

No offence to you but your bro sounds like a bit of a thicko to me

Bit harsh, although I do hope he can give better advice about women than he can about tech to his lil bro lol

The Xbox and the 360 are just "gimped" PCs. I'm willing to wager the next xbox (Durango) will be based on the AMD LLano socket, the GPU is rumoured to be the 6670 from AMD. The console is what it is (no true upgrades) and the UI is simplified for ease of use for the end consumer (all the patching is automated).

He is doing computer science, A1 :)
A bit unfair, considering most PC games are console ports...

That answers your own question. If we use Crysis 2 as an example, when that was first released on PC it was only DirectX9 (limited by the xbox360), it was a while before the HD textures and directX11 were added. With this in mind......

As I said the consoles are locked to 30FPS. Look through the benchmarks there. The 460 can be overclocked much higher than that stock speed used. The GPUs are displaying higher quality graphics (textures, shaders etc) and the minimum framerate is basically 30FPS i.e it's doing more than the console and still winning.

I don't understand you wanting to use an old intel socket? You want to be on the Z77 mobo. Even an i3 CPU on here will be good, the lucidMVP on the mobo uses the CPUs IGP to give a free boost to the GPU. Because it has an IGP you don't need to add a GPU yet, the 6850 and 460 are good budget GPUs and will most likely equal or still better the next gen consoles however you really want to have 2GB of VRAM to stay ahead of the game ;)

He’s probably not too far off tbh. If PC games were specifically coded for a GTX 460 they would annihilate the PS3 but they aren’t. PC games are coded for a variety of hardware so don’t make anywhere near the use of the hardware’s potential.

If the PS3 had a GTX 460 in it would blow the socks off a GTX 680 in a PC.

Just look at games like Killzone 3, Uncharted 3 etc they are stunning, and thats all on a 6800gt.

Ive got a GTX 680 and a 3930k and im yet to play a game and think "wow that absolutely destroys the PS3" and when you consider i could buy 20 x PS3's for the same price as my PC, just shows how much PC gaming is lacking.

This TBH. I had a PS3 and a Radeon 4850 with GTA 4 on medium looked worse though ran a tiny bit better on the 4850 than the PS3.

Right now I have a GTX480 and though I am running GTA 4 on max 1080p I must say the PS3 version looked damn good for a sub £200 console.

With all the ports nowadays you just dont get much for all the extra money you put in a gaming PC verses a console. The developers just use all extra horsepower to cover their lazy coding. Thats why for the last 7 years system requierments on the PC have been going up but the same games still run fine on the same old consoles.

Barely any PC games surpassed Crysis 2007 and that was 5 years ago.

Even the new Unreal Engine 4 demo didnt look that impressive and we have heard tons of rumors that the next gen consoles leap wont be as big as PS2 to PS3.
