My car is running like a bag of bolts

Yesterday my car started to sound really bad and not drive properly. The tick over seems to be screwed up and at low revs its very jerky to drive. When pulling up to junctions it sometimes cuts out and I loose power steering, this has happened on a few corners but I have been ok. Its booked in for a service on Friday so I'm going to bear with it for now but was looking for any suggestions as to what it may be. The temp gauge is fine, the only difference is the car idles at about 500rpm when usually its just over 1000. My old man reckons it could be a dodgy injector but I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks

You could try reseting the ECU by disconnecting the battery. This will wipe the radio settings also though and immobiliser too?

Also check the vacuum pipe for the air intake is not disconnected as that can cause an erratic idle

The car is fitted with a custom Dastek Unichip which remaps all of original ECU settings, I will try the battery though.

Thanks for the tip about the pipes on the air intake checked under the bonnet after work there and 2 of them were hanging off. All back to normal now :D

Any idle problems on a Zetec engine are almost always due to a faulty or detatched vacuum pipe or the infamous T-piece fitment :)

Were are these air intake pipes dezuk? That sounds very like the problem on my 1.6 zetec in my escort, ive been advised to clean the idle control valve. I've already replaced the maf which sorted out the idle problem.

Well I have an adter market air induction kit so the pipe layout will be completely different. But look for any pipe wok around the air filter area maybe ?

thanks for that great advice :) How's it relevent to the thread though mate? :p

Tom.

It will almost definitely be the idle control valve, a well known fault on the zetecs. Try cleaning it with some carb cleaner.
