Welcome to my yearly thread on my rubbish Q6600 and Gigabyte GA_P35_DS3R.
Here are my last 2 threads where I got nowhere -

Something from day 1 (September 2007) has not been right.
When I setup my BIOS with the Optimized Defaults it acts like it's gone to a Clock Ratio of 9x but when saved and rebooted it goes back to 6x :(
Pics 1 & 2 show the Optimized Default saved and then rebooted which goes back to 6x.

Here are my other BIOS settings and I have just flashed with the latest BIOS.

Any help appreciated - again.

You've probably done this but are you running the latest bios? Have you emailed giga to see if they know a cause for this issue?

Its probably a "feature" for recovering from a failed overclock, just whack everything to its minimum to boot up.

I'd be RMA'ing the board if it were me, assuming that the system is stable and not failing to boot each time at x9. It may not be supplying enough voltage for the old 65nm processor or to the memory, try setting it manually. (Complete stab in the dark, and I'm sure you have tried this already)

1) I have never overclocked, I just want it to go at the stock speed but it has never done it since I had the system in 2007.

I'd contact gigabyte as you've already flashed to the latest bios or roll back to the F4 bios which specifically supports that cpu (maybe worth a try). If it were me though i'd buy a good cheap 775 board off the bay and put this 3 year saga to rest.

Yeh something is definitely wrong there. Would seem like the hardware sensors are messed up so your motherboard is throttling you with the lowest multi.

Hey dmpoole,

looks like a *really* wierd problem you have there! :p

I've encountered the strange [x6] multi problem myself with a Pentium Dual-Core E5200 but that was only when I manually undervolted the processor down to 1.00vCore, once the votage was raised a bit the Multi had no problem sticking at its default. I wonder if there is a tiny chance your chip is doing the same i.e its not getting enough vCore si its reducing the multi?

The other possibility is your chip has faulty DTS and is throwing a spanner in the works? . . . I'm not sure what temp your chip is actually running at but that last everest screenshot is showing a socket temp of 86°C which is *major* high. If the board thinks the chip is over-heating then is there a chance it is *throttling* the processor multi down to [x6] in an effort to keep it cool?

In your boots I would have either tested another LGA775 chip in your existing board or tested your chip in another board. I know not everyone has multiple kit for this swap-out testing or has a friend who lives nearby that wouldn't mind helping you but in situations like these it saves a lot of headscratching and time!

Can you please list all relevant hardware as so far we know just the CPU and mobo? . . . . Memory, PSU, GPU etc would be grand along with history of the hardware (i.e new or used etc)

What heatsink have you got? . . is it the stock retail Intel quad core unit with push-pins? . . . . is it secured properly?

It doesn't solve my problem but I've just got back from Overclockers with these -

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 965 Black Edition 3.40GHz
OCZ Platinum 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C7
Asus M4A785TD-M Evo AMD 785G (Socket AM3)

I feel sorry for the guys getting out because the bank is covered in snow to get back onto the A34.
I left my car at the top with a 'broke down' note on it:)

IT WAS THE BLOODY PROCESSOR.

This morning I put the Q6600 on a brand new mobo and it acted exactly the same.
No matter how many times I tried to change the BIOS is stuck at 6x.

I wonder if OCUK will give me a replacement since it never worked right :)

That's definitely a strange one, How old is the cpu, if it's Retail version you get 3 year warranty.

Definitely, especially as you have tested in another motherboard and got the same results, if you purchased from Ocuk then they test it before sending it away to confirm.

You may get a G0 cpu back which is lower power :p

While we are on Q6600s. I have one on watercooling at 3.60ghz on a gigabyte p45 at the moment, but it seems to have randomly developed a weird problem.

Sometimes it just seems to loose the overclock and return to 2.40ghz while running any game. Which then for some reason causes my graphics card to freak out and max the fan speed (though the system doesn't crash). This has only recently started happening after being fine for around year with no changes :/

NasherUK, you are attempting to *hijack* a technical support thread, really your problem has little to do with dmpoole's particular hardware issue (My CPU is stuck at 6x - help please) so really you should make your own thread . . .
