My Dell 24" monitor just exploded !!!

Mine's still going strong after replacing the inverter board 2 years ago. Not sure where to get a replacement from now that place in the USA has gone though.

you all make me worry now, I have bought 2407WFP second hand about 18 months ago, I don't even know how old it is, is there any way you can check that?

Wow.

First off I haven't heard of any 2407 or 2408 suffering this problem although not saying it hasn't happened.

Second, I haven't heard of a 2405 that has had the power inverter replaced failing again. Same proviso as the first point.

The caps on mine where not swollen
Ideally you need to measure caps with an ESR meter out of circuit, to se if they are good or not, but checking if they are leaking or swollen is better than nothing and a nice visual indicator.
It the PSU that goes and LED backlit monitors still need a PSU to power them ;)
They do indeed. A CCFL PSU will usually have more parts than an LED PSU however...

CCFL inverters are very high voltage and therefore pretty dangerous to fiddle around with. It seems failures of CCFL inverters are pretty common, but this may just be because they have been around for longer.

LED power supplies are low voltage, more efficient, and seem less prone to failure. I have yet to hear of any LED backlit monitors have a backlight failure, but I would be happy to be proven wrong. :)

Correct. The CCFL bulbs in them don't last forever, just like incandescent lightbulbs. 5 years sounds about right before they start conking out under normal daily home use.

They are fluorescent not incandescent ;), the former still wears out but lasts a lot longer than the latter.

FWIW, I think normal 5mm LED's are supposed to last around 100,000 hours, it would be interesting to know the lifetime of the higher powered type used in monitor backlights...

No - I was referring to your ordinary household light bulb. Making the point that CCFL bulbs generate a lot of heat as waste in the same way that an incandescent light bulb does and this causes component stress and shortens lifespan. I know the light generation process is very different in each of these but I was making a point about heat stress. The CCFLs themselves are rated to last around 30k-50k hours under 'normal use' so that's generally not a problem - but the overall heat stress of the system is a problem and it greatly increases the risk of other components failing. I know a lot of this isn't from the lamp itself but rather the inverter - in my example I was using it as a whole 'system'. At least I think I was - that comment was from nearly a year ago, you know? ;)

WHAT THE HELL !! it made this huge poping noise and a 'sizzle' noise... and just cut off, i tried another power cable and bloody sparks flew out the back, what the hells going on ? how long is dells warrenty normally ? its about 4 years old :(

Sounds like switch mode psu. If it's not under warranty a good electronics engineer should be able to fix it.
