My First ATi card HD 7950

OK, i'm a sad Panda :(
I have been using my HD 7950 for a week now and frankly i'm disappointed with it.
I am getting very mild occasional artifacting, so mild it would be hard to RMA, but it is driving me nuts.

I have tried giving it slighly more volts and also 'underclocking' it to that of a reference card.
Game play is generally worse (jerkiness) than it was with my 470 GTX SLi set-up.

I am considering videoing it, but this is what is happening -

Anyone else had the same problem?

Try the 12.4 drivers.

Seems to affect Sapphire and MSI 7 series cards.

LOL! I asked 'will I have any problems with ATI!' the answer came back no.
The drivers clash with my Reaktek audio drivers in the Heaven 3.0 benchmark - solution buy a sound card?!
utter garbage!
It's going back under OCUKs 14 day satisfaction guarantee and I'm going back to nVidia.
I am very dissapointed and I have sold two lovely 470 GTXs.

Uninstall the AMD hdmi sound driver-could be the problem.

There are lots of people in the same boat going from one vendor to the other, they simply don't like the change.

Like myself, you will probably be largely unimpressed going from 470 sli to a less performing gpu.

I went from 6950>70 CrossFire to a 7970 if anything, it's slower in every title unless I'm using 3D.

Add in overclocking, and if you don't have a good one, it deflates the purchase.

If you are getting artifacting on stock clocks, then you have a dodgy gpu as well which just adds to the disappointment.

All is good now :)
I have contacted OCUK support and I am returning the card within the 14 day money back guarantee.

I have ordered this one as a replacement:

It's slightly more than I wanted to pay, but this card actually beats the HD 7950 at my resoultion in many titles. 1080p

Sorry guys for me it is Intel, CPUs and chipsets and nVidia GPUs

If I wasn't a dyed in the wool fanboy, I am now!

I do remember the shocking nVidia chipsets though - shudder

Although I very much have my doubts on what you said, enjoy your new gpu when it arrives.:)

My 4870/5870/6950>70 CrossFire/7950/7970's have always just worked, without the need for 'uninstalling driver ect', apart from when a new title that comes out that required specific drivers-which Nvidia would need to release one as well for specific titles like Rage.

My Nvidia gpus before them worked as they should as well, unless, in the same scenario required a new game specific driver.

I don't care what gpu is in my system as long as they suit the price I'm willing to pay, if I can get a faster green gpu for the money, then that's what's going in my system and vice versa.:)

Hi there,

A 660Ti is a worse card than a 7950. It sits between a 7870 and a 7950 with AA on medium or level with a 7870 when AA is maxed.

A 670 would be a match performance wise to the 7950. Unfortunately I think that in most scenarios a 660Ti would be a downgrade on your previous set up. The extra VRAM will help in maxing today's game but your averages will be down.

But if you're happy that's the main thing.

Time will tell, but it depends how you view 'worse'
Will the sound click and run slowly on Heaven 3.0? No
Will I get artifacting at factory clocks? errm no!

Great cards these HD 7950s.

Have a look at this and many other benchmarks online:

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2012/08/16/nvidia-geforce-gtx-660-ti-2gb-review/2

The 660 Ti doesnt really struggle at 1080p

You got a bad card by the sounds of it - you're just as likely to get a bad nVidia card.

No the 660Ti doesn't struggle but I was just pointing out that you're not getting as much for you money as you could do. The 660Ti is crippled by it's 192-bit bus which really does make performance nosedive when AA is applied. It's not a bad card, it's just a £200 ish card rather than what it's being sold at.

The problem with most reviews on the internet is that they were reviewed on older, worse performing drivers which means that the performance may not be representative of what it is today. This is AMD's fault for having poorly performing drivers on release comparative to now so I am only giving you the full picture.

Additionally, they only tested on an i5 2500k at stock clocks. CPU bottleneck on the results? Perhaps....

Sounds like you just got unlucky with your card, but that can just happen with AMD and Nvidia cards alike, occasionaly you get one which is unstable at stock.

But the 7950 is the better card when you factor in overclocking, which most of us do on this forum.

I just hope you have a trouble free experience with your new card :)

Like I said, in hind sight, I would have kept my 470 GTX SLi setup.
I don't know why I changed, guess I just got the itch.

I also agree that the GTX 660 Ti is overpriced. However I am caught between a rock and a hard place. The TI does have a useful boost over the GTX 660, especially the overclocked one I have chosen.
The HD7950 romps ahead over 1080p.
Don't get me wrong, the aritifacting is just the occasional flash here and there but it bugs the hell out of me.
