My mate who's well into his music, done it through college, university has had had one of his mashup/remixes played twice on Radio1, and there could be a chance of a performance on radio :) he's well hyped.

If you interested. Visit his myspace page (look past the background) and listen to the music, the one that was played was his mashup/remix of bonkers.

Also here is a youtube vid of his live uni performance (live mixing of his productions/looping with visual mixing).

Landan.
Had a listen, it's alright - but not too hot if I'm being honest. He's taken a great bass line, added the chorus line from Technologic, and then messed it up with some crap effects and timings. It's alright, worth the listen, and definitely better than I could do - but he's still got a good way to go. Encourage him to get there :)

(And tell him to sort out his website!)

Nope, was defenatly played on R1, twice, here is the tracklisting for one of the shows, he also might be in with a chance of a performance set on there.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/bethanelfyn/tracklistingarchive.shtml?20090910 (first track)

also for his uni dissertation he done a live performace, live DJ'ing of his production mixed in with visuals using a mixer and visual mixer.

See this youtube video of his performance mix of his production productions (watch this video, its pretty good) :)

Don't mean to be rude but Lol @ the Live Uni performance.
To me Live mixing is using 1210's & your fingers not a Lappy pre programmed & a crap load of pre prepared mixes/cuts.
Good Luck to the lad though as I know this is what you young'uns are in to.

Yes I am a snob when it comes to my mixing but then I had 1210's back in 89.

i see where your coming from malc , especially with that video

take a look at this if you have never seen it before though. some very interesting points about how technology can improve DJing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1H9W_iLff0 and its not like hes doing it just because its easier as he can probably mix vinyls in his sleep.

even the old school turntableists are using the likes of serato/tracktor thesedays. theres only so much you can do with vinyl and people reached those limits years ago

Hes not just using a laptop there, the laptop is for sampling, he is using cdj's with looping and effects.

He does live dj sets (not on vinyl, who uses vinyl these days :p) I don purely because of tune accesability, the functionality and features that are available with CDJ's and the cheap price of tune downloads

Anyway, the live set he was doing wasnt the focal point, the focal point was to showcase his tune productions, all remixes on there are his work (he has a lot more but were not featured on this video).

I think it's time to move on and accept CDs as tools of a legit DJ, I don't see anything wrong with saving cues on SD cards as long as the mixing is done live as it still allows the set to be changed around based on what the crowd are after. Most of the work is done when picking and buying the music, and it's more important than how it's mixed.

There's a difference between using a laptop to mix MP3 files for you, and a producer using it with something like Ableton to play samples back live, combined with effects racks/CDJs etc. The former probably won't be seen at any reputable place anyway.

It depends whether you're going to judge someone on their skills at mixing or their skills as a DJ though. Just because when you were involved in the scene the best thing people had were some pretty crap Technics doesn't mean that's how it should always be done.
