How big is the turbo to get 300hp out of a 2 litre or am I just behind the times like usual!?

Mitsubishi were doing it ten years ago. Not sure what turbo they're using in the R (according to the internet it's an IHI), but the engine has different heads, pistons and various valves compared to the lump found in the GTI.

There is a new cupra 290 which will also probably be in estate form soon if not already, should also be available on similar lease plan to the R

The Golf does nothing for me looks wise (apart from the colour), but I can certainly see the appeal of having such performance and capability in a very practical package. Quite astounding really. Enjoy :)

Oh yeah there was that evo FQ400 (or something). I seem to recall it was out dragged by a prius on top gear on a rolling start in 5th gear at 30mph because of the lag :p

Usable through how much of the rev range though?

Depends what you want in a car. The golf would be out of puff by 6k where as the evo would be pulling all the way to the red line. You can not have it all with a turbo. There will always be a compromise. (Unless you have some sort of antilag). Luckily I have a mid range turbo for the daily duties and a gutless below 3.5k machine for the weekends!

Thread title is misleading as well as it is not "My" as you are renting :p.

And that's why the good Lord gave us ALS. BRAPBRAPBRAPBRAPBAPBAPBAP.

ALS doesn't help with that tesr because the problem isn't lag. At 30mph in 6th in an evo, the problem is you are below the boost threshold, not turbo lag.

Put simply, boost threshold is the rpm when the turbo starts to kick in, lag is how long the turbo takes to respond to throttle changes when above the boost threshold.

Find and drive something like a Renault 5 GT turbo or a big turbo escort cossie and you quickly learn the difference.
