Booted up my iPod today only to be faced with the dreaded sad face icon. Was working fine over Xmas, has been in my bag since then unused, so I have no idea what's killed it.

Tried forcing into disk mode as per instructions here but no joy, same icon appears. I'm not paying them £200 to fix it, so is there anything I can do?

It's a three year old 20GB Colour.

Cheers :)

Sorry to hear that bud - probably the best recommendation is to buy a new iPod, if it is not even resoponding to forced disk mode sounds like the soul has left the body :(

Probably not what you wanted to hear.

Ok, thanks for the advice guys. I put a massive dent in an iPod Mini a few years ago, and found a company who bought it off me for for £40, so I think that's the easiest option. Oh well :(

Have you tried a hard reset? I thing you hold down two buttons and it resets it. It fixed mine (20GB Ipod Colour) and its been working fine since, then again it just stopped working, didn't give the sad face. Look up which buttons to press and see what happens :) You have nothing to lose and if it works, you'll have your iPod back.

Yeah, hard reset just gives me the sad face. Reading into it further, it seems that the hard disk cable can easily come loose on the 4g Ipod, so I think I'll open her up and see what's going on.

EDIT: Gave it a couple of hard bangs on a notepad just now....and hey presto...she boots again! :) :) :) Looks like it was a loose connection after all.

Percussive maintenance- wins every time!

I had a 3rd Gen iPod with the same problem. A 3" drop onto a hard surface fixed things, though over time it started happening more and more often (the dropping probably didn't help) so I would be aware that you may need to replace it at some point not too far in the future :(

Does anyone know if its easy to repair the dock connector port at the bottom of ipods?

My ipod touch is a bit tempramental with the new style ipod cables as to whether it will establish a proper connection. It works fine with one of the old style cables though with locking buttons on the side.
