so guys is it worth me trying to get 8mb currently on 2mb with Tiscali ( )

Code:
Operational data report : near end (Downstream)
-----------------------------------------------
Attainable line rate : 9200 kbit/sec
Attainable Atm rate : 8736 kbit/sec
Used line rate : 2692 kbit/sec
Fast used Atm rate : 2272 kbit/sec
Interleaved used Atm rate : 0 kbits/sec
Rel. capacity occupation :	29
Noise Margin :	20 dB
Line attenuation :	10 dB
Output Power :	11 dBm

Operational data report : far end (Upstream)
--------------------------------------------
relCapacity upstream =	37 pct
noiseMargin upstream = 27.0 dB
outputPower downstream = 11.5 dBm
Attenuation upstream = 4.0 dB

You'll actually only get the ATM rate of 8736. And this doesn't apecify what parameters it's using - it could be running that all the way down to 0dB SNR margin - BT will start by fixing it at 6dB.

It's still definitely worth the upgrade though - you'd probably do fairly well. It is worth noting that your attenuation is incredibly low, but your SNR is comparably rubbish. If you tried plugging into your master socket with the extension wiring disconnected, it may go up. I'm sure it shouldn't be that low.

I haven't got quite so detailed stats as those, but can anyone check mine? We were 'upgraded' to 8mbit yesterday on BT, but the download speed remains exactly as it was at 2mbit.

We're 0.8miles from the exchange (as the crow flies, no council estates etc to make it weave in odd directions either).

Downstream
Connection Speed: 8128 kbps
Line Attenuation: 35 db
Noise Margin : 11 db

Upstream
Connection Speed: 448 kbps
Line Attenuation: 22 db
Noise Margin: 26 db

Upload speed has increased, but downloads remain at 2mbit. Bleh.

Well, as the stats say, you're synced at 8Mb. But if you read a few other threads & info on max, you may learn that the data rate will stick at 2Mb for (most likely) 3 days. Then it should increase.

I have got the same problem, but I was upgraded ages ago. Router still reports as 8Mbit but download speed has remained the same (2Mbit). My upload does seem faster though.

Dont expect to see any downloads go faster than about 2.5mbps at best. MaxDSL is such an awfull service it is unbelievable. I was with it for 3 months and not once saw downloads going over 3meg even though i was sync'd at over 7000kbps. :o

Get in contact with your ISP - if it's been over 10 days, they'll be able to do something (they need to contact BTw). I hope they have a support department who has a clue though - who are they?

Not universally true though. You need an ISP with minimal shaping and congestion, and you need an exchange that don't have too much congestion either.

I get speeds of ~520KB/s, and I'm synced at ~5Mb. Friends of mine are synced at the full 8Mb, and get 700KB/s at off peak times, but 600KB/s most of the time.

There isnt a site or program I can use for this then? Ive been upgraded to 8MB for just over a month now and the download speed sucks. I rarley get more than 300kb/s download unless its during the early hours of the morning when I get about 500kb/s (Im connected at 7.6Mbps)

Sounds like an ISP or Exchange congestion issue. Using multiple connections is always a good idea for faster downloads though - various download managers can do this.

How did u manage to test like that to see what u line is capable off.

It'll just be from the router.

With your attenuation, SNR margin and current sync rate, you could get a rough guess from MrSaffron's "calculator" (link in FAQ).

BT, so I doubt they have a clue :p
