My Macbook Pro Saga - contains disappointment.

If you spent £2k you should expect it to be perfect! £70 credit is nothing. I got my MBP screen replaced recently for 1 dead pixel which is no where near as bad as the problems you had! Hope you get it sorted :)

Apple's margin on these devices is astronomical, 50% and above. So from your £2000 they have made at least £1000. Scream blue murder mate, you feel let down by Apple and saddened that the Apple reality does not appear to have matched the high expectation they have cultivated in the media. Tell them you have been discussing this on the internet and people out there are "horrified" to hear your experience. That'll make them sit up, trust me......

A day off work is £150 or so at least. Plus parking, petrol, child care, your time getting to Brum, etc. Time is money mate. I'd be angling for £300 at least. Ask them for a Applecare 3 year warranty - they're about £300 or so - and directly related to your purchase.

Thanks for the advice kirkster.

I bet they just try to sweeten the swap in brum with a free magic mouse or something similar.

Maybe a free iPhone lol! I may test the water by saying that, and if they laugh then I'll know Im in for another disappointing day :(

Just to put the £70 for all your hastle into prospective, for 2 faulty MBP and spending near 2K. My wife got £40 back for her MBP being shipped with old iLife software. It came with 9 and should have been 11. We didnt even ask for any cash back it was offerd due to Apple not updating there software pack before shipping. So £70 for all your trouble i`d be very close to throwing the MBP through the window of the shop. Not that I would just a measure of the rage I would be feeling. £70 pfft

That is nuts. 3 different laptops, with 3 different problems. Purchase shy of 2K. I would just be tempted to get all of my money back and go visit the Apple store yourself.

I can't get over why you are getting these goods damaged. Basically push for as much as you can. Don't be shy. They are a massive company with plenty of money.

Well the guy who rang me said that it must be caused by damage from the delivery process.....ie...blaming the couriers!

I didn't say at the time but thought that to be a load of rubbish. I can't see how any of my problems could be caused by dropping the package or something similar.

Thanks for the example Orford - but just to correct you....I've had THREE faulty MBPs, not two!

What I'll do in the store is just list all of the inconveniences I've had, from time off work (twice), calling Apple whilst at work, driving 50 miles to Brum....and not forgetting that it would have been almost a month since I first ordered it! So all that wasted time in between too.

I might even say, 'Even if you gave me a free iPhone, you'd still be making a massive profit from my 2k!'

Oh....and not forgetting the thing that annoys me the most.....

I will be driving to Birmingham at my expense, to get a new MBP and to be shown around OS X.

That is no different to anyone else buying a new MBP normally - they seem to forget all the trouble I've been through in the past!

Do it, there is no harm in asking. If they don't say you want a return a refund and your ready to post the experiences on the web. Don't forget to show them photos.

Right guys, sensible answers, what do you reckon the following adds up to:

Day off work for me (awaiting delivery of replacement)
Probably about an hour in total at work calling Apple arranging replacements
All my time wasted since the first was delivered on 30th December
Driving 50 miles to Brum and back (and parking) to visit Apple store.
Wasting my only day off this week visiting Apple store

I'll be speaking to a manager at the Apple store on Saturday and I want to hit him with everything I've got!!

I'd be happy with free applecare. A lot of the companies we deal with at work offer extended warranties on their products to customers who have suffered like yourself and as there is little initial cost to Apple , you stand a good chance of them agreeing it. It would also "help restore your faith in their product/company"

^ I could. But my nearest is Birmingham. So I would have to go out my way and pay to travel there to replace it, and waste my time too.

But at least I would see it first! ;)

I know this is probably too late but there is an Apple Store in Worcester, Not sure what they do there but I do know they sell Apple Mac's :p :p

The guy rang.......

He first off started to explain that as I bought the MBP from the Apple store, that's a different company to Apple Retail - so it gets a bit complicated (some sales BS basically!)

He said the best outcome would be for me to visit a store so I can get it swapped out there, and they can show may around it etc.

He then said how he appreciates me having to travel to Birmingham, so they'll thrown in some 'free accessories' to compensate. And left it at that after some more small talk. He's going to brief the manager at the store, and give me his details so they know what to expect before I arrive.

So...what free accessories shall I badger for?! 27" display!? It better be more than a mouse or something stupid like that! It will probably cost me near £40-50 to get to Birmingham and back, inc parking etc, and that's doesn't include my time!

I suppose it could have been a lot worse, but then again, it could have gone better too.

You should have been much harder on this guy. Ring him back before you go in the store, and demand a significant discount (30%) or a extended warranty. To be honest mate, this was your chance to nail down your compensation, and it sounds like you wimped out.
There is no point raising the issues in the store, you are likely to get very little. + your on a tech forum so I doubt you really need help "setting up" your apple= total fob off.
It sounds like going to the store will be fairly pointless for you and a big waste of time. Explain that to the guy you spoke to previously, and ask for a discount + replacement.

That's not actually true - it's a machine from the store, the store will deal with it, and the store can do almost whatever they want to keep him happy - and they will.

Their aim will be to *cringe* 'get to yes' i.e make the OP happy with the situation, and most of the stores will do almost anything to do so.

Free upgrade to an SSD or free Applecare.

I've already bought a better third party SSD, I purposely didn't go for Apples overpriced crappy SSD.

Fair point well made.

I was a little soft yes, I was going to send him an email back as he did contact me earlier this morning.

EDIT: Also if I get fobbed off in the store, then I'll write a very formal letter back to the UK Director of Sales explaining my utter disappointment in Apple etc

In all honesty the best place is the store. Don't be a **** about it, but make absolutely sure they know exactly how disappointed you are and that you do expect something to restore your faith in the brand. They have the power to make this right and they will try.
