My machine hangs at the motherboard splash screen

This started happening yesterday for no reason i can deduce.

I have read that reseting my CMOS settings will fix this and my manual explains how to do it.

But not having done it before is there anything else i should check?

Also when on the splash screen I can't access the BIOS.

Also if i leave it on for about 10-15 mins it will boot up, sometines asking for me to select a boot drive to and sometimes not.

Unplug any hard drive and optical drives you have attached to see if that lets it go past the post screen, if it goes straight past plug them back in one by one until you find the offending drive (if it is a drive issue).

my mums old laptop used to do that, stay on the splash screen till we press escape
