Not read the thread completely either, just the OP. Your mate is very very lucky. I would have thought that at the very least he would have been done for wasting police time and given either a warning from the police or taken to court. Either way he would have had a mark on his record. If he had tried his luck in court, lied under oath then found guilty of wasting police time, he would have ended up in crown court and done for purgery carrying a maximum possible sentence of up to 2 years I believe. I know someone who was banged up for 6 months for what started as a small lie.
Well done as a friend for telling him to confess, apologise and nip it in the bud. Hopefully he won't do anything stupid like that again!!
