Yes, I know, it's another E46 M3 on Overclockers Motor's forum - it's about as original as a *INSERT RELEVANT CLARKSONISM HERE". I wasn't going to make this thread originally as I thought there are lots of little BMW slash M3 threads and people would moan. Then I remembered that I didn't care, and wanted to keep a little diary of my ownership.

Anyway, my story is that I bought an E46 330ci as a bit of a stop gap car May 2014, when I sold my 335i as I had had it for a while, it cost a lot to keep running and needed the proceeds from the sale to fund my new house. The 330CI was a lovely little run about car and just reminded me that really lovely cars don't need to cost a fortune. I bought it for £3400 from some rich guy in Surrey and he had spent £3000 on it just a few thousands miles previously doing all sorts to it. I later sold it for a tidy profit.

Anyway, I had found myself looking at E46 M3's on various websites for a few months and decided that I would hold out until May 2015 time to start looking seriously and going out and actually viewing them. I’d always fancied an E46 M3, and considered one before I bought my E92 335i. I was pulled towards the 335i due to it being newer, easier to find a good one, having more up to date tech and because of scared stories about the running costs of an M3. Anyway, my promise to not go out and view any cars until May didn’t last long.

I saw a beautiful Estoril blue with every option I think BMW offered on it, but when I called up, I found out it had just been sold. I was disappointed, but kept looking when I happened to see a nice 2004 Silver Grey one advertised at a small independent trader. I went in, initially very sceptically as you should do when viewing an 11 year old M3, but quickly found out from the salesman (who was very good tbf) that it had 2 owners (with the first owner having it for 9 years), with 4 Conti M3 tyres, an interior in excellent condition, with all the options I was looking for. Also, most importantly, it had had it’s subframe replaced at great expense at Dick Lovett BMW only 12 months previously. All sounded good – so I set up a viewing.

On the way down there I called several of the garages the car had had work done at to confirm what was done etc. I also wanted confirmation from the dealer where the car had had it’s subframe replaced that this in fact had happened – and what a palarva. Dick Lovett Bristol were the rudest and most unhelpful dealership I think I’ve ever spoken to. They refused to confirm anything and cited the Data Protection Act (I lol’d too), I then spoke to the “service manager” who came out fighting and was verbally aggressive on the phone. I then tried calling BMW UK customer services, who, although very helpful and polite, weren’t able to confirm this and only dealers within the “Dick Lovett” umbrella would know this stuff. So I figured I’d just start calling Dick Lovett’s until I spoke to a service advisor from a different branch who was very helpful, and confirmed the car had been to their Bristol dealer for the subframe repair. Super.

On viewing the car, all was in order. The front discs were worn and needed changing, but we built this into the deal and I walked away with the car at a price I was very happy about.

The car is a 2004 Silver Grey/Black nappa interior, 93k miles, 2 owners, FSH, SatNav/TV/Bluetooth, heated seats and just been serviced by a BMW specialist. This fitted my requirements to an absolute tee. The car is utterly fantastic, I love it. I know I love it, because I’m doing daft things like cleaning the engine bay in the pitch black and freezing cold, just because. The noise, the character, the looks and the handling of the thing is just a cut above what I’ve had previously. I love the little bits on it that differentiate it from other cars, that just make it feel more special. My aim for this car is to restore it to be as OEM as physically possible and to feel like it did when it came out of the factory.

Anyway, the car did have a few minor issues which I discovered after I bought it, as listed below:

- Xenon bulb flickering
- Front brake discs worn
- No floor mats
- Bluetooth incompatible with newer Android phones
- CD Changer not working/being recognised
- Sat nav disc out of date
- Light scuffing/small amounts of corrosion on the wheels
- All wheel arches have some (albeit very very small) rust on them
- Gear knob worn
- Wheel centre caps destroyed

Now, the good news is that none of this was too bad.

Xenon bulb – I just bought a new Osram Xenarc bulb from Powerbulbs for the bargain price of £29. Was looking at eBay and aftermarket bulbs but quickly decided there are too many fake/crap bulbs out there and £29 was a very good price. This was fitted quite easily – some people struggle because they have fat hands, but I reckon I could change a Xenon bulb on an E46 in around 3-4 minutes now.

Front brake discs – I managed to find Genuine BMW front M3 discs for the bargain price of £240 from a dealer doing a special offer on them. Also got the front pads for £77 extra. Not bad at all! These are in the shed waiting to be fitted.

Floor mats – I was only looking for Genuine BMW floor mats. Aftermarket mats, no matter how many times the seller puts up “OMG BEST QUALITY EVER SUPER LUXURY” on the advert, are well known for wearing prematurely and look crap. I was lucky that I managed to find a set of Genuine mats from a 2004 E46 touring model, which fit perfectly, and after hitting them hard with a hoover, interior cleaner and a stiff brush, came up a right treat.

Bluetooth issue – Now this was the toughest part to source. After Android 4.1, Google switched the Bluetooth profile to something else which meant it was no longer compatible with Bluetooth in earlier cars, including the E46. Even though mine was a 2004 model, it still wasn't compatible, with it connecting and disconnecting after a few seconds. There are 13 generations of BT modules for these cars and finding a 13th Gen one is near impossible as these were in certain cars that were still in production in 2007, which were based on the older platforms. My car had a Gen 5 module in. Anyway, long story short, I discovered that R53 (i think?) Mini’s had the same type of BT module and managed to get one from a 2006 (Gen 8 module) car for £125 from a big Mini breaker. This was plug and play and worked! I sold my old one for £65 so £60 cost to change is excellent.

CD Changer – Now the nav unit wasn’t even recognising the CD changer, it was invisible to it. There was no noise when trying to eject the magazine etc so I took it out, discovered there was a fuse on the back of the changer, which proved to be blown. £1.79 later I installed a new 3A fuse and it burst into life.

Sat Nav disc – There’s a guy on M3 cutters selling new nav discs with postcode function for £10. Bargain.

Wheels – These are original and never been refurbed. The factory finish has done brilliantly if it’s lasted 11 years and only has a very small amount of corrosion. Unfortunately, because they are wizards in factories, this would be almost impossible to do again. Most people who get them diamond coated/mirror polished get them corroding within 12-24months. I happened to find a company called FAWheels who provide a refurb service for M3 wheels, who diamond cut them but powdercoat them so they look almost identical to OEM alloys – and they do an exchange service, costing £396 including the switching of tyres etc. I’ll get this done soon I reckon. Link: http://www.fawheels.co.uk/exchange....msport-genuine-diamond-cut-alloys-detail.html

Wheel arches/rust – I took it to BMW Colchester who found rust on all the arches, and both sills where the sill meets the front wing. They submitted a 12 year corrosion warranty request to BMW UK which was approved, with the exception of the passenger arch, which had had paint before (fair enough), front passenger wing (no idea why?) and sill. I’ve written about it in another thread, but the long and short of it is that they came up with various excuses about the sill and front passenger arch – so I sent them an email and they decided they now will do the front passenger arch, but still won’t do the sill. Got it booked in on the 16th March for the entire drivers side to be painted and the front wing/door of the passengers side. I figured that was not bad and I’d just get the other tiny bits of rust done elsewhere at a fraction of the price.

Gear knob – Fitted a ZHP weighted gear knob, and had to buy a new gaiter from “topgaiters” on eBay at the same time. Looks and feels great.

Centre caps - As with all of the older BMW centre caps which weren't domed and had stickers, they eventually started bubbling and looked horrible, so ordered some centre caps from Amazon which claimed to be Genuine BMW items.... for £15. Now, I've bought enough car parts online to know when something smells like BS, and with the genuine items costing £35, these clearly weren't genuine items. However, I figured if I received them and they were not genuine, I'd be able to get a refund without issue. They arrived, had BMW stamps on them, looked brilliant and fitted completely snugly. I emailed the seller to enquire if they were indeed Genuine and he issued me with a refund for some reason! Nevermind. Just have to see how long they last, and when I get the wheels refurbed I may just get new genuine caps then.

Plans for the future

- In the shed I have this little pile of things which is getting bigger on a weekly basis. So far, I have a full set of Sachs M3 shocks/struts. New Lemforder top mounts. New Genuine brake discs and pads. 4.5 litres of BMW coolant. New Bosch AL headlight lenses. New Genuine flat Evo wiper blades. New MTF LT-2 gearbox fluid.

- Although the car has had FSH, it doesn't appear to have benefitted from the enhanced servicing that E46 M3's need (valve clearances/gearbox fluid/diff fluid and seals/coolant). So my plan is to through it into my friendly BMW specialist to get a full Insp II done and to fit the parts listed above I can't do.

- Will also order a new steering wheel from Royal Steering Wheels when the car comes back from the paintshop to freshen that up.

Anyway, I’ve rabbited on enough, and since I don't have a super duper camera, here are some rubbish photos. If you want good photos of an E46 M3 in various artistic positions and locations, feel free to email mrk:

Nioce! :D

By the time my insurance will allow me to have one of these, they'll probably disspear off the streets and the last examples will go for stupid amount of money... :(

Don't ask me how it works, because I have no idea, but my 330ci was £550 to insure, my 335i was £500 before that....this is £370 to insure. And i'm not even an old timer!

Superb, lovely looking motor.

I currently own a 330Ci, what's the power, handling and comfort differences that you've noticed straight away? Be interesting to hear your thoughts.

Thanks. I was expecting the power to be all at the top end, but it really isn't. It has plenty of torque from low down and you never need to wring it's neck to get it going. Of course, you do get the best from it when you hit the top end of the revs. And it's quick, every bit as quick as the 335i. The handling is very good, and I'm on worn shocks at the moment. The steering is very nicely weighted, there is stacks of grip and stability in the corners, although the tail does want to come out more than I have been previously used to. The comfort is the same as the 330, and better than my 335i with normal tyres. It's just such a brilliant all round package. The feel it gives you though is completely different. I honestly promised myself I wouldn't say things like this, as it used to annoy me when M car owners used to say this and I didn't understand what they meant or thought they were just talking their car up a bit - but it really is true.

The E46 is just so pretty isn't it! Lots of chav'd E46 M3 in East London unfortunately - that one looks mint.

Yeah, I hate seeing M3's where people having slammed them, put on crappy alloys and tinted every part of them. :( However, my plan with this one is just to get it looking, driving and feeling as much like it did when it rolled out of the factory as possible. There's no denying it, the E46 has done remarkably well in the looks department. It does look really fresh still. Having said that, I did see a photo of an E46 M3 parked next to a new BMW M4 and it does look a little bit...boring by comparison to the newer stuff!

I'd honestly expect the run of the mill pricing to be £180 for a pair. What is the run of the mill pricing for them?

There aren't many companies that make the discs. ATE do, but are hard to get hold of and Pagid do - both of which are the same/more expensive than BMW main dealer pricing.

AM discs are £250 for a pair so I certainly wouldn't expect them to be more than that.

Edit - gaygle you got a bargain as they appear to be £340 for a pair. £340 for a pair is just lol BMW.

I have no idea how DB9 discs are £250 a pair. I know that the M3 ones are two piece discs and are obviously drilled - no idea if that makes them more expensive to produce as a result? What size are DB9 discs. Can only find the sizing for carbon ceramic discs, which clearly won't be £250 a pair.

I'll play the guessing game.

2004 facelift with 93k miles in good spec/condition - £9,500.

Looks really nice, the paint is like a mirror. How much did you pay? You told us the price for your 330Ci but not the M3 :)

From my considerable time searching, a car of this spec/condition/age etc should have been between £9-10k. I got it for £8200. It was up for £8500 and I couldn't think of a reason to negotiate any money off for it, apart from brake discs, so managed to blag £300 for them. Really pleased with this price, and this combined with the excellent price i got for my 330ci meant the cost to change was just over £4k and it left me with a decent pot of money for improvements and failures.

First photo shows just how lovely these cars still are. I still wish BMW had sorted out the exhaust note though

I really like the noise the car makes. Don't get me wrong, below 3krpm the 330ci sounds better. The 330 burbles and just sounds beefy. However, above 3krpm the exhaust kicks in and it makes the car sound and feel like a bit of racey engine rather than a cruiser. Ideally, in the future I want to do something about the lack of induction noise. I'd give my right arm for a carbon airbox, but the truth is, £1800 all in is just too much. I could stomach the GSR airbox at £1000, but it's the remap, the relocation of sensors and the fitting of the box which puts on another £800 to this mod, which at nearly £2000 all in, just means it's a bit of a no no.

I'm hoping to get it to a place where the car is in near perfect condition and the suspension is sorted, then save up hard and possibly go down the route of BMW Performance front BBK and maybe a carbon airbox if the lottery Gods are smiling down on me.

What is the performance like in comparison to your 335i?

Pretty much as Freefaller said. The 335i just felt so strong from 1.5krpm-5krpm and just felt that there was no let up in acceleration whether going from 40-80mph or 80-120mph. The M3 is a lot more progressive in how it puts on the power, but it doesn't lack torque low down at all.

Very nice, steel grey is a great colour. :)

Silver grey ;)

Looks very nice and seems you have sorted all the little bits.

Re the discs and pads, sounds like a bargain to me I dont know how a DB9 could be so cheap I think it was around £1.5k for a full set of 4 on a Porsche.

I'm looking at the BMW Performance BBK in the next couple of months, which looks amazing. :o

Re your 335i, why was it costing so much to run? did you not have it under warranty? I would have thought this is going to cost you a small fortune to keep on the road?

Yeh it was under full warranty and initially the warranty was very good value for money at like £340 for no excess (annual payment). By the second and third year this had gone up to around £650 for no excess or £521 (if paid per month which I needed to do as I had now ticked over 60k miles) with £100 excess. So that was £750 a year if you had a couple of failures and it needed to go to the dealer. Then the dealers were always hard work - when I first got the car the main dealer covered everything with no questions asked or faffing. This slowly seemed to change and they needed more and more evidence to give to the warranty company and started requesting things like service history etc. I got the feeling that the warranty companies were belt tightening. It felt a lot like an up hill struggle by the end. The annoying thing was though, I wasn't going to be able to run the car without this warranty at the threat of the turbos/injectors going was too great, which i couldn't afford to self warranty due to the costs, so I was stuck at the mercy of the BMW warranty.

Then there was the VED which punched my in the crotch every October at a cost of £500. This hurt more than everything else put together (damn 3g/km doubling the VED).

Then there was the £500 for a pair of front discs and pads which I had to eventually buy genuine after Pagid discs and pads and Bosch discs and pads kept giving excess vibration under braking.

Don't get me wrong, none of this was crippling by any stretch of the imagination, but I also needed the money at the same time and had owned the car for 2.5 years so it was a good a time to change as any.

Well, I did say this thread would be a bit of a diary, so I'll catch it up with stuff I've written in other threads:

Its not a bodyshop within the dealership. Balgores is the name of the bodyshop - they serve pretty much every franchised dealer in the area and have some bodyshops built onto the side of dealers.

BMW UK have called back trying to say its a poor repair and not to BMWs standards. Sounds to me like they've been reading their anti corrosion warranty terms and conditions. As I said above, it must have been such a poor repair that 2 BMW bodyshop managers from different dealerships thought that that wing was factory paint, and the approved bodyshop who are undertaking the work thought so too, only finding out when they started sanding it down.

Now, not being funny, but are BMW really trying to criticise other people's standards when they are suggesting they should just patch up the part they've sanded?!

I've now got to wait 2 days for a manager at BMW UK to call me back. Great.

I am, but they're not doing me a favour, this is the warranty they offer on their cars, regardless of where you bought it from, up until 12 years old. Some may argue 10 year old BMWs shouldn't be rusting away on all 4 of their wheel arches like every E46 does. You would feel put out if your turbo and injectors failed and BMW told you that they'd replace the Turbo and not the injectors, but to look on the bright side because you're getting at least some work done for free. You would argue that the warranty should cover them BOTH.

The worst thing is that they've started stripping the rear quarter panel and now just want to bodge it up and repair the bit they've sanded! The previous repair must have been so awful that BMW bodyshop guy said it was original paint, the paint depth gauge showed it was the same as the rest of the car and its taken a Ferrari/Bentley/BMW/Audi etc approved bodyshop to start sanding it down before they have realised.

If nothing else at all, its absolutely terrible form.

In continuation to the above, the Aftersales Manager from the dealer called me back and I had a long discussion with him about it. He'd been out to see the car before calling me, spoken with the bodyshop and BMW UK about everything, so it was really good to see he was up to speed with everything before he called me.

He apologised for the palava and for the misinformation given by several different sources. He clarified that they had started doing the sill and discovered a small amount of filler, which caused them to stop and check the rest of the panel. They have looked inside the rear passenger wheel arch and seen a bit more filler, when they have then called BMW to report this. BMW have that since they have no way of tracing who did the repair, and concede that it *may* have even been BMW, they can't be sure of it. And anyway, even if another dealer did do the work the car would need to back back to that individual dealer to do the work (). They said that that the rear arch has probably had corrosion on it before and that's why it was repaired and that it was repaired well, with even the paint depths indistinguishable to the rest of the car.

The long and short of it was that they weren't going to touch the rear quarter and because I have no way of proving where it has been done previously, and neither do BMW, we were at a stalemate which I couldn't win. He has said that the rust on the rear quarter was not bad at all, and their were pinp ricks of rust, rather than perforations like their were on the front wings (which are being replaced).

I got tired of arguing about stuff so I just said ok fine. They'll do the sill (but not warranty it) and the two front wings (which they'll only warranty until the end of the anti corrosion warranty in some 15 months time). I questioned this also, as the Balgores who are doing the repair warranty their work for life, but it all gets confusing because BMW have paid for it and like they do with their Insured Warranty when they fit new parts, the 2 year part warranty is overruled by the Insured Warranty period. This means if my front wings start rusting again in 15 months 1 day, I have no comeback, which sucks IMO. I'm just hoping they do a good enough job to last 5+ years.

Anyway, I just want my car back now. I'm sick of BMW wiggling out of everything, I'm sick of driving a 1.8 diesel and I've got a lot of goodies to stick on my car!

Anyway, my courtesy car. I should be thankful that I didn't get something much worse, but it still isn't very good.

So i was meant to pick up my car from BMW last week, but they were running behind (yes, it has taken them 2.5 weeks to order two new front wings, and spray them). Someone was meant to call me on Friday to let me know when the target date was - they didn't and I've had enough of BMW at the moment so they can do the chasing. Last I heard they were only just receiving the wings on Wednesday, then they needed to primer, paint, laquer, blend etc so it'll be middle of this week by the time I can pick it up I think.

I've got a 64 plate Merc A200 CDI as a courtesy car, and I swear the only thing keeping me sane is the bluetooth streaming and the good MPG.

This particular model has a 136bhp 1.8diesel engine, ZF 7sp auto, with the visibility pack and....that's it.

My initial thoughts on picking up the courtesy car a couple of weeks ago were "Nice!". That has changed rather rapidly over the time I've had it. The main reason for it is, quite simply, the engine. It is so juddery, noisy and unresponsive.

Now, had I not had a car with this very same gearbox in, I would have been included to blame it. However, I know from the 320d I've had before that the gearbox is wonderful, when paired to the right engine. However, this gearbox and this engine simply do not work together.

When it is in "E" for "Economical" (standard driving to you and me), it trundles along quite happily, but when you are faced with a hill, and you are in 6th gear, the gearbox either does nothing and the car just doesn't accelerate, or if you push the throttle a bit more, it eventually changes down two gears and there is quite a lurch as it does so. I've worked out, to make this engine work with this gearbox, it needs to always be in 1 gear lower than what it is in.

This is not as bad as the delay when pulling away from junctions or roundabouts though. It's almost dangerous. You push the gas and the revs on the car rise for about a second or so, then it's almost like the gearbox catches up and hurriedly engages the torque converter causing an uncomfortable lurch as you pull away. This is all the time whilst you're desperately hoping that the Auto Start/Stop doesn't kick in. This brings me to the next problem with this car...

The technology. Don't get me wrong, I love car tech, from ABS to DSC and all those other little bits that are supposedly meant to make driving a car a bit safer and a bit better for the environment. But this car completely misses the mark. First of all, the auto start/stop WILL stop the engine if you stop the car for more than about 2 seconds. Which can easily happen in slow moving traffic. This means when you're in a 50 metres queue for a busy roundabout, the car can turn off it's engine and turn it on again about 10-15 times. This is infuriating. Not only do you get the horrible judder as the diesel engine switches off and on, you also get the 2 second delay it takes to start up and engage a gear. Again, you end up lurching everywhere. This is somewhat in contrast to the BMW auto/start stop which although had the problem where it didn't start the engine quick enough, it was much more selective and intelligent about when to switch off the engine. I've had it a couple of times where the Merc has switched off the engine literally just as i've stepped on the accelerator to get out of a junction into the gap. That 1 second delay really can make a difference!

The second piece of technology is the Collision warning/mitigation thing. Before I had this car, i thought this piece of tech was going to be wonderful. I mean, what's not to like about not being rear ended by some dosey bint who isn't concentrating? The reality is a bit different in this car. When you come close to *anything* it starts beeping at you. I recently have had it where the car has done a full on emergency stop as I've pulled up at a junction next to a car who was turning the other way out of the junction. Because I got within 2 metres of this other car, my car thought I was obviously about to smash into it, so has kindly braked for me. Unfortunately the only thing it did do for me is give me a heart attack.

Initially I thought the steering and ride were quite good. Unfortunately this has changed also. The steering is weighted and turns very crisply, which is nice, but it has absolutely no feel whatsoever to it. None. Nada. It really reminds me of a more weighted version of one of those 2004 type Vauxhall Corsas. It inspires absolutely no confidence at all and is completely artificial. The ride isn't bad though. Nothing to write home about, it's fine. The brakes are crap, they are either off or emergency stopping. It is very difficult to apply these brakes moderately.

The interior is generally quite good, inline with a VW Golf or BMW 1 Series, although my God, who thought mounting that sat nav screen like that was a good idea!?

There are a few good things to say about it though. It looks great from the outside, really nice and dare i say "posh"? The bluetooth music streaming works perfectly and the Xenon lights are good. The car also does very good MPG.

When comparing it to rivals, I'm sorry, but it just loses out to them all. For me the 1 Series is my favourite. The drive in the new one series is fantastic, the brakes are very controllable and powerful when you need them to be and the steering although not putting a Lotus Elise to shame, is much better than the Mercs.

The new VW Golf is also a very good shout, with it doing everything well, and I imagine a few grand cheaper than the Merc (and BMW).

The Focus, although the Focus isn't a 100% direct competitor to the A-Class, it still is much better to drive, which it really really shouldn't be considering the pricing difference.

I hopefully haven't been too harsh on the Mercedes, because it's not that bad, and I think if it had a proper engine in it, most of my grievances would go away. If you're reading this, just don't get the A200 CDI with auto box unless you hate good cars.

I just came.

Looks like changing pads will also be a 3 minute job in the future.

Unfortunately not, these require the caliper to be removed to change the pads. No matter though, it'll be a 10 minute job instead.

Can I ask how much those BMW Performance callipers were inc everything to go with them? I have a choice to make soon, either get my existing callipers refurbed (shotblasted clean then finished in silver) or just get the performance callipers and go full on.

I just need to weigh up the cost pros/cons of either.

Well I needed new front discs and pads so used this as part of justification. I told the dealer I got them from that I wouldn't tell anyone how much I got them for, but I can see that Cotswold are doing them on Cutters for £300 each, which isn't far away from what I got them for.

Caliper brackets and braided hoses were £260.

CSL ATE discs I can get for a decent price (Trust if you're interested)

Pads are OEM Textar

And that's it.

All in, you're looking at around £1100

Hah! We are more alike than you know :p

Unfortunately I can't do any more of this stuff for probably another week. Had an email from BMW earlier saying that they haven't even received the wings yet, let alone start painting them etc. It's looking at being over 3 weeks to paint a couple of wings

They have agreed to machine polish the car though so rest of the car will match the doors/wings. How much do you want to bet i'll be left with holograms all over the place?

Yeh I am interested in the price of those as well, as my callipers are nasty (why BMW did you do nothing with them :/). I assume they would go on a Z4.

If you're talking about a Z4M, yes the brackets should work fine, you already have the CSL discs so would be a case of just getting the calipers and brackets and you'd be done.

They are so much bigger than I expected though, they look so awesome. And as an added bonus they are over a kilogram lighter each than the tiny OEM calipers!

£1100 all in is pretty good for a big brake upgrade with OEM parts too. I will need new discs later in the year for sure so would much rather go big brake upgrade route by adding a bit more £ and those callipers would look smashing behind my wheels for sure.

Are you fitting them yourself? Same pad wear sensors too?

Yes it certainly isn't bad value for money for a Brembo 6 pot kit! Especially when you need new discs and pads and your calipers have gone 11 years without a refurb and look a little worse for wear.

This is what the look like compared to the standard calipers:

zhvTGWXh.jpg

And this is what they should look like fitted:

QCTixR2h.jpg

Going to have everything fitted in one go in the next few weeks/couple of months. Just got to decide if I want to replace the standard springs with Eibach Pro Kit springs. These apparently give next to no drop in ride height (which is what I want as I want it to be OEM as possible) and will last much longer than the standard springs which seem to snap every 20k miles.

I just don't want the car to look "lowered" or anything other than OEM, which is hopefully what Eibachs will do.

Looks amazing. I think I will forego the stock calliper refurb and go the above route too. Will the callipers alone fit the stock M3 discs or must they be fitted onto CSL discs? I am perfectly happy with on the road stopping power of the stock discs, the only thing I really wanted was just the callipers to look the part since everything else does :p

Yeah they look so nice. They are only designed for the 345mm CSL brakes and the brackets have been very precisely made so that they are simply bolt on with no fuss, and give complete sweep of the disc, unlike some other brackets. If you need new discs, the CSL discs aren't much more expensive than the standard ones at all. Like, less than a tenner extra if you get them from the right people ;)

Just found out that the company who I've renewed my insurance with in 3 days don't do modifications at all! Urgh. Have to cancel that tomorrow and go elsewhere.

Lovely looking brake kit :)

Thanks, just got to find the time to get it booked in and fitted, along with all the other bits!

Yeh its a Z4M, I need new pads all round and front discs soon according to BMW when it went in a week or so ago. So this would be the perfect chance to swap to these brakes.

I assume the brakes you can get for a decent price are what I have already on the car ? (I have no knowledge of such things).

Sounds like the perfect time to upgrade! At least you won't be wasting discs with life still in them.

Yes the Z4M and Z4MC came with the 345mm "CSL" discs as standard. The E46 M3 came with 325mm as standard, and only the CS and CSL got the 345mm ones.

Those calipers look fantastic, so much better than the stock ones.

Yeah they really do. I can't believe that only 5 years ago, when the BMW Performance range came out it cost £350 for a pair of these calipers or £600 for the entire front kit inc discs and pads!

My bad, jesus that's a bit of a fail right there. I'd have thought they'd make them just like the brembos. That's right PITA seeing as they're mahoosive on top.

Yeah it's not ideal if you're looking to hot swap your brake pads every few weeks, but I'm not planning on doing that, so it's not an issue for me.

Hopefully with basically all new suspension, fresh discs/pads/6 pot calipers, gearbox oil change, this should feel absolutely awesome for when that hot summers day comes around and the roads are empty ;)

That's quite a good price from a local dealer with no discount etc!

Yeh they aren't officially for the Z4M or E46 M3 but some guy has had some exceptionally high quality brackets made to fit the caliper to the 345mm disc.

Happy days re: brake pads and discs. Its amazing how they can suddenly grow back eh?!

In other news the guy from Cooper Colchester has sent some pictures of my car. Wings have been sprayed, doors and rear wings have been blended and machine polished and sill has been repaired. Even in his crappy photos, it looks good, it looks very good. Its going to be like picking it up for the first time again as I've pretty much forgotten what it feels like to drive!

She's back!!

Paint quality is excellent as is the fitment. They ended up doing pretty much the entire side of the car in the end, to blend it all. Looks very good indeed. It feels so good to be back in a good car. Trying not to be too melodramatic, but that Merc was slowly killing me. Most things about it just were disappointing. Having had a decent amount of time with both, it's clear that the F20 1 Series runs rings around it in all areas apart from maybe aesthetics.

Anyway, this evening I have fitted new Genuine Bosch AL headlight lense covers which has freshened up the front, even though my old ones weren't that bad at all. Got them for a bargainous price too, as with most of my purchases!

I've also fitted some nice new Sachs M3 rear shocks this evening. Having had 95k miles of abuse, they were in need of replacement. Just taken it out for a spin and all seems well. I'll need to get the fronts fitted soon (i can't be arsed) along with the BMW Performance calipers and hopefully the car will be near it's best.

Also discovered slightly more wear on the outside edge of the rear tyre so will probably need a proper KDS alignment which I can get done after the front shocks are replaced.

Jobs still to do:

- Steering wheel refurb in all nappa leather similar to E92 M3 wheel.
- Fitting of front shocks, BMW Performance brake system and gearbox oil swap.
- Wheel refurb/CSL style wheels for same price?
- KDS alignment
- Get a new key (only came with one!)
- Get the BM54 upgrade.

Yeh just looking at refurb options. For the full shebang diamond cut and powdercoat in OEM finish its nearly £400. For the regular refurbishment in shiny silver it's £288. Both look good but think the OEM diamond cut and shiny finish is a bit of a defining styling tweak on the E46 M3.

Re: BMWP kit. Any pads for the E82 135i with brembo calipers will work. Pad wear sensor needs to be the one from the E39 as it's slightly longer. The BMWP custom brackets come with front and rear custom made Goodridge hoses for £260. Its a very good kit that has been put together as it is all custom made and nothing off the shelf. Normally this would mean it is shoddy and doesn't fit properly but in this instance everything is supposed to be perfect and many others have bought the kit. I also bought some ATE super racing blue fluid the other day. It's meant to be good and not sure when mine last had a brake flush.

Cheers for the heads up. Was looking at BMKeys who do the same service and are close to the wheel refurb exchange place so was going to build it into one journey down to the outskirts of London.
