IMHO this is the most horsepower I can get without spending silly money.

Key points:

- I plan to get this CPU up at 3.8Ghz on all six cores (max on this CPU, right?)
- From the reviews I have seen the stock cooler is enough for the above?
- How do you think the components gel together?

I think this is the best I can get for the money in terms of power. I would also consider Ryzen, but the intel chip just seems the best for the money!

Thoughts? :)

Jono8 you are probably right.

Has anyone come across a review of Ryzen 1700/1700x vs 8400?

Both OC'd which one is the better chip for gaming / general use (noting the 8400 wont go above 3.8 Ghz)?

Ryzen option. Or I could save a further chunk of cash and go for the R5 1600 which is going for a steal right now?

Depends why the OP went for the 8400 in the first place. Is it to save money?

Because although not my choice it is about £100 cheaper than a 1700.

Umm.. Where are you getting your information from dude? The 1700 is £206.98, and I'm sure as hell you can't get a 8400 for £106.98 lol!

Looks like 1080Ti + minimum spend elsewhere without bottlenecking. For gaming thats better than a 1080 + 8600K/8700K/1700X/1800X.

Interesting. Care to back that up with a review?

I game at 1080/1440p so I would be surprised if I would have a CPU bottleneck tbh...

However if you know of a review which proves otherwise I'm happy to re-consider.. ;-)

1700 is £260 on OcUK

and the 8400 £220.

Oh wow! Your right. The 1700 is now just over £200!

Stonking purchase!

I know awesome, right?

Loving the aggressive competition back in the CPU market. Great news for the consumer!

I think my mind is made up unless Intel slash coffee lake prices by a good amount. I'm sure the Intel factory is working over time to build more coffee lake CPU's!

The only thing is be concerned about is making sure you get decent vrm's.
Chipset won't make a difference to longevity.
In fact I was kind of miffed when people on el cheapo b350's were getting the same overclock results as me on my crosshair hero. Given how cheap the b350s are even if one dies in 2 years time replacing it won't be an issue imo.

Exactly. I'm in my 30's now. The days of being mugged off buying "special editions" of motherboards with extra bits of plastic and a slightly fancier BIOS GUI are over.... :P

What's a £100 when you're happy to spend close to £1500... ;)

Because its £100 for the CPU and an extra £50-60 for the motherboard for questionable benefits, possibly worse performance in high threaded applications.. ;P

I'm sure Intel will respond with some mega price drops, but atm they have dropped the ball bigtime.

Oh well the game is the game, right?
