You are the one challenging the service intervals of modern cars not me, you provide the evidence.

I am not seeing loads of cars on the BMW forums for example with engines failing due to oil condition. BMW's have had variable servicing for 10+ years...
 
I don't post on any BMW boards, but I have come across plenty of moaning on tweb about BMW engines when googling engine sludge. A lot of it went hand in hand with oil analysis carried out by forum posters where, from memory, the optimal duration was c.9000 miles before a change, if using very posh oil
