my rear diff mount is clonking.. should the mount be welded?

the GT4's have problems with the rear diff mount becoming worn and as such the rear diff clonks about at times.

The garage has offered to weld the mount to the car to remove the clonk. A replacement mounting plate is £60.

Is there a disadvantage of welding the mount point to the car? the people on the gt4 club seem to think itll put more stress on the drivetrain and make the rear of the car vibrate a lot...

Surely thou if its welded up and noisy i can take it back to them and give em a slap? ;)

If you weld it would that remove the rubber mount hence making the diff totally ridged and fixed to the body of the car?

If so bad idea.

I don't quite understand what you mean by welding the mounting point to the car. If you mean welding the diff directly to the car then that is a ludicrous idea (and probably not possible as I suspect diff housing is alloy)

Is the diff rubber mounted and if so is the clonking caused by a failed rubber bush, or has a mounting bracket cracked? If it's just a cracked mounting bracket then welding should be prefectly ok, if it's a failed rubber bush then replace it.

no!

i want to weld the mount to the car

then the diff bolts onto the mount

the garage said that they get something called a "half moon bar" and weld that in.

So there will be no rubber bush and the diff wont be able to move slightly i take it?

Also confused. You seem to be saying there's no rubber involved in the whole joint.

Is this right? Surely not..

Anyway - I think bypassing a rubber mount (assuming one exists) is a bad idea. It'll create noise and it'll create vibration and soon enough - it'll break.

The GT4 has the rear diff.

The rear diff is bolted to a mount

What and how is the mount connected to the chassis?

The confusion is how the mount is connected to the chassis.

If its supposed to "float" in some way, taking that ability to "Float" will cause vibration to pass directly to the chassis.

If you fit solid engine mounts to a car it'll rattle your fillings out so doing this to the rear diff will probably do the same thing.

If the mount is connected to the diff via rubber bushing then uprated items must be available?

welding is free :)

You drive an expensive to maintain performance car. If you'd really consider a bodge job instead of a proper job simply becuase it saves you £60 you need to think long and hard about whether a Ford Fiesta might be a more suitable car for you.

i was asking the opinion of others as to weather it was a good idea, not a comment on the suitability of my vehicle.

Of course its not a good idea, its £60 to do it properly, stop being a cheapskate and get the mount replaced with a new one.

Repairing a cracked/broken mounting by welding it is fine. Bypassing any rubber bushes by welding the mount directly to the body is a very bad idea unless this is purely a competition car. The rubber mounts were put there for a purpose!

A picture of the offending mount and position would have helped smooth the advise channels. ;)
What the above say is correct in most cases but if the mount is just a metal mounting block then there would be little difference in welding it.
Having said that motor manufacturers spend millions developing cars before they release them to the likes of us. If there is a listed part it's there for a reason even if not odvious at first.
I always strive to return my cars to out of the box condition.

its that bit in the middle held on by 4 bolts

let me get this right.. you have asked the lads on a GT4 forum.. and they say "DONT DO IT" so you have come here wanting us to say "YES DO IT" :p

Id take the advice of the guys who should know myself ;)

£60 is nothing.. get it done properly
